W&M Granger ferrules |
Lead | ||

Hi Guys, I have a quick question. I've got a W&M Granger Victory 7030 that has a problem with the male ferrule on the tip section. Specifically, the
ferrule pulls apart slightly at the first of the 2 scribed lines below the wrap. Not sure I'm explaining it correctly so I'm posting a couple pictures
that shows it a little better I hope. You can see in the second picture where it is pulled apart slightly. My question is this ferrule shot completely or can
it be fixed? Ever seen this type of issue before?
Thanks for any help. together:

Looks to me as if the solder gave way, I am wondering if you couldn't apply some liquid flux and some heat to re-solder the joint? Do you have some B/O
jasper?

looks like it cracked through, it will be putting a lot of stress on that area. it can be hard soldered(not soft soldered or low temp silver solder), annealed,
and remachined. It would have to be removed from the rod as the hard solder temps are way over 1000. the jasper thread is pretty common, lots of us can spare a
few yards for a repair

Thanks for the responses. Based on the fact that this particular rod is no collector's item and falls squarely into the user category (1 tip, non-original
bag and tube, the 1 tip it has is down 1/4") do you think I would be better served trying to find some replacement ferrules or trying to have this ferrule
repaired? I'm not the handy type and wouldn't try to take this on myself, so I will need to send it to someone.

It's broken. Granger ferrules are hard drawn, there's no solder involved. I would find a replacement ferrule, the next step after the ferrule breaks
like that is the bamboo will go at the same place.

Unless I'm mistaken you can buy Wright & McGill ferrules from Ricks Rods.

According to their website they do. I just sent them an email. Thanks for that tip. A quick search shows that these are a size 12? So the next question would
be where would you guys send the rod to have this done? It looks like Rick's Rods might also be able to make the repair?
Thanks again for the help. |

Yes, its a size 12/64 ferrule. Same size as the tip ferrules on the Granger 9050. There are thousands of those around.
If you can't find a brand new #12 ferrule, you should be able to find a short/broken 9050 tip pretty easily. Be sure to be able to test the fit, if you can, first.

john channer wrote:Right you are, John - you beat me to it! I agree that the ferrule should be replaced. 12/64 ferrules should be an easy find. Every 9050 has 'em. Good luck! |
