Rod preference for small flys |

I was wondering what rods people liked for fishing the spinner falls and hatches as far as small flys are concerned. I'm talking about small to medium sized waters with flys like Tricos, Midges etc.

Rods that come to mind are the Orvis 7/3, which is made for this kind of fishing. I don't own one currently, but occasionally shop for one when I do alot of this kind of fishing. Its really a limited rod.
I use a small Bob Taylor 3 wt currently which has fine tips and is responsive. For this very light sort of fishing, I also like some of the Japanese glass rods- most notably the 7' 3wt 5 pc glass rod made by Takada on the bluedun.net site. Was told that the taper was designed after Mori Takada's preference for light Leonards (he builds nice cane rods too). With the exchange so favorable, one can probably have one for 400USD these days; they are quite nicely finished. www.bluedun.net/RodsandRe..._glass.htm |

I like a Catskill Fairy, 8' rod for situations like this. Recently I was very impressed with a Heddon 8' with a 1 1/2 ferrule.

Similar with Ceaky:
Just spent the morning in thin Eastern waters with 7x and 22 ants the constant... a japanese glass rod(5 piece, 7', 2 wgt) carries the day so far for me. That will be until I can afford a Leonard like a buddies - but the Glass is so well designed with a firm last section ( 5 pieces) that you can have both delicacy and fight a nice fish... Come to think of it...I enjoyed a W&M Granger aristocrat, 8.5., this morning - one tip is thinner and loves a DT4 in close - just fine with 7X - NB |

Any good parabolic.... Not only for the protection aspect, but for the ease of casting as well. I can fish a 7'6" to 8'6" Parabolic for hours without strain, and I find it more relaxing. Additionally, I can tell when I need to go sit down and take a break, because my casts start getting sloppy when I get tired and I start "pushing" things.

Mike,
I have a couple of favorites for that smaller stuff. I'm a lighter line guy, fishing smaller Wis. spring creeks where my typical fish is around 11-12". I have a Payne 100 copy that Jaybird here helped me get introduced to cane rod building. It's a fine 7 1/2' 4wt that will be special for some time. But my favorite is a Geo. Maurer 7 1/2 3wt spring Creeek model. Swelled butt and wonderful action. I'll never sell her! I also have a Hal Bacon Payne 195, 7 1/2 ft 3/2 Guba finished 3wt that's spectacular. She runs a close 2nd. A really close second! And I'm willing to take my bruises and I may be all alone on this but....I hate those Payne colors. Reminds me of my old granny's carpet! There, I said it. (A decent coat of spray paint would improve those colors....) ..running/ducking here... I love 3wts for fishing the Trico hatch though. Jeremy. |

A few other superb rods for this purpose in various lengths to suit your preferences:
Howells 733 (a friend also says the 803, or Bolt versions, are a good choice) Schlecht Ontario 793 Fries Noodle 802 Kagerow Kei 763 Reams 783 Garrison 193 (6'9") (Duck reproduction) Hidy 733 Kakuhiro 693 parabolic and possibly the 691 progressive, though I'm not sure yet as I haven't cast that last one yet. Lots of good ideals, thanks to all. I fished the spring with a Payne 97 clone with a WF4. A rod I traded for a couple blanks that worked well also was a FET taper the 6'8" 3wt. One of the blanks involved in the trade was a FET 8' 4wt that I plan to try next trip out for the Trico spinner fall, just about finished with a PHY Perfectionist hollowbuilt that should fit the bill as well.
I have been thinking about a new rod in the 7' range and was fishing for ideals. I like the softer rods not only for 7x tippet but with the delicate hook up on 24 to 28's. Mike |

My favorite rod for this type of fishing, strange as it may seem, is a 9' F.E. Thomas Dirigo that throws a 4WT
effortlessly and will drop small flies on the water as if they were thistledown. Medium/slow non-tiring rod. Personally, the only detriemnt to this rod is it's very small grip. Bob |

the rod i like is a model 50Leonard built for me by Dwight Lyons. Its based on a 50 from early in the last century with Flip ring guides and a all metal slide
band reel seat. a pure casting pleasure to rival any rod i`ve ever cast.

Depending on the size of the water I'm fishing. Orvis 7/3 2/2 if you feel this rod is too slow try a 2dt or even a 1dt. Mine will handle all 3 lines.

This is my favorite type of fishing and I would spend 90% of my fishing on Hat Creek if that were possible. In a 7 footer I like my Jenkins GA70L3-2 3 weight,
7 1/2 footer would be my Schroeder 4 weight quad and the 7 3/4 footer would be the Brackett Winston quad with a 4 weight. I have a nice 8 foot Nick Taransky
Monaro Deluxe 3 weight that would be good for small flies and light leaders.

I am using an Orvis 7/3 with a St. George Jr. DT3F. With a 12ft 8X leader, presentations are real delicate. - Dan |

All the above mentioned are good. I think the critical factor for your rod selection as much as tip feel, is the action that allows you to present the fly
accurately and softly ... and perhaps some bird's-nest of the tippet.
My own preference would be a 7'6" to 8' for a 4/5 wt. that can roll cast well and keep a tight loop when needed: J. Wagner 380TNS - 8' 4/5wt 3/2 (www.wagnerrods.com) C. Carlin FTS - 7'6" or 7'9" 4wt 3/2 (www.farnorthrodsmiths.com) RK Bolt - 8' 4wt 2/2 (www.rkboltrodco.com) Be sure to pour a few drops of your favorite spirit in the stream as gesture of respect before making your first cast. |

I love the small fly fishing on both small streams and tailwaters, rods from 7'8" 3wt. Jerry Foster, 7'6"4wt. Ed Burg, 8'3" 5wt. Randy Johnson, 8'6" 5wt. Chris Rainey. These are just a few of my Favorites. they will all protect very light tippits, but handle small to really big fish. All the rods that have been talked about before are great rods and tapers. The best one of all is the one you own, and you like it. We all have a few favorite builders (those of us that don't build but fish them) and we go to yet another bamboo gathering, and cast another that would fit inbetween one of our other favorites. Just remember the man that dies with the most toys win's

I use a f.e.t 6'8" 3wt for most fishing.
I toss everything from size 8 on down on that rod. I caught a 6.25lb bow on 8-4-07, on that rod.
