I just won an auction for a video called Digger, portrait of a rod maker. As anyone seen this or have any information about the maker?

I don't know much other than the fact there's a video about him out there...
just did a quick Google and came up with an article from Ron Barch on Digger. Check out: www.canerod.com/gatherings/Catskill/ Docs/DiggerRenaissanceRodmakerNew.PDF haven't given it a read but looks pretty in-depth... let us know about the video... i haven't heard much about it and have considered picking up a copy.. -matt |

Yes, I have a copy. I think you will enjoy it. Digger was somewhat of a local character in the Northern Berkshires-- Adams or N.Adams I believe. I have never
heard an unkind word about him or his rods. A low volume rod maker who seemed to enjoy experimentation. I understand he played w/ tempering bamboo by freezing
w/ liquid Nitrogen -- He had access to the equipment at Sprague Electric Co. His "Ice Cream Parlor rod " is legendary. I am not sure anyone knows how
many were made but it seems certain that there were not many. The "student" in the video is Fred Moran who is still living in Adams Ma. at last
report and for quite a while had a reputation as a good bamboo restorer.
The video is nice, but according to legend much of the original footage was lost before the final cut was put together. AgMD |

I own one of "digger's" rods, a 6' 9" 2/2 3wt. that I got from Martin Keane. Nice small stream rod. I bought the video after I got the rod. Interesting guy...died in 1999. I know Ron Barch held him in

I bought a copy of the tape when I first started. The first time I reviewed the tape I thought it to be humorous. Kind of like how to build a fly rod with a
pocket knife but after watching it 15 or 20 times I find to be a valuable asset in how to build a Bamboo Fly Rod. I pick up another technique each time watch
it. Would have enjoyed knowing Digger.

the rodmaker's name is Francis Degere. He was from Northern Michigan. Ron Barch at the Planing Form probably knows the most about him.

I would really like to know more about my "digger" rod. It came with one tip finished and one tip wrapped but unvarnished.

I watched the video today, only 30 min. long. But I do think it was worth the $15 I spent on it. Just for the fact of watching someone make a rod, and I did
see a few things that I will use however. Overall, very interesting and a good addition to my collection.

I've never seen any of his rods but people hold them in high regard. But in my opinion the video made him look like a fly by the seat of your pants
amateur. Just the way he did everything so quick. It was like he slapped the thing together. He seemed like an awesome dude though, one I'd like to go
fishing with.

The only problem I had with the tape was the music, it was bad. You have to remeber he only had thirty minutes to show what he did, ten of that was scenes of
him fishing a creek. I have the GW video that shows the steps of making a rod, its an hour long and still you have to put operations together in your mind to
see how it all fits together. It's not detailed and it doesn't have to be, it's just his story. I wonder if I will ever reach that point?
