I wouldn't have thought I would have this problem with a new orvis production reel. I contacted Orvis and they said I would have to send both the reel and rods for them to try to fix.
Thanks for any advice any of you may have.

CFO II Disc Reel |

Has anyone had any trouble getting this reel to fit their rods. I'm having a problem with the reel seat being to thick to fit into either the base or
sliding band. The seat is attached with two phillips screws so it would appear relatively easy to replace the reel seat. I don't really want to file the
seat down myself.

Ed I have several CFO reels (plus extra spools) ..... each of the reels have the thick foot that make for VERY tight fits on most of my rods and ALL of my rods
with sliding bands. Have contemplated filing down the metal but decided just to put LOTS of pressure on the sliding bands to get them on as far as possible.
Haven't yet had one slide off the rods but they are very tight. No problem with other UK-made Orvis reels (Battenkills, Large Arbors, etc.), just the
CFOs.

Bob,
Sounds like the same problem I have. I have been reluctant to force the reel too much being afraid I'll mar the rod. By the way, When I checked with Orvis they told me if I filed it down myself, the warranty on the reel would no longer be valid. If they filed it, the warranty would stay in effect. |

Yes, of course. It all depends on who does the filing. Maybe the screwing, too.
If the foot is held in place with just those two screws, why not order an extra foot and file away 'til you get it the way you want it? You could put
the new, filed foot on the reel and save the original.

I wonder if the foot from a Orvis battenkill might have the same spacing for the screws? Maybe Orvis can advise about this ... and, if so, send you a Battenkill foot to install.... no filing necessary. Hmmm, I need to take out some of my Orvis reels and see if this might be possible. Best Bob Ed - Forget what I said above ... just looked at all the feet my Orvis reels ... the CFOs have two screws that are angled, while the Battenkills / Large Arbors have two screws that are straight / in-a-row. But, that being said, maybe Orvis might still have "another" (?) thinner foot to fit the CFOs.

Nice to hear others have had this problem. It fits most of my rods, but a problem for some. I do enjoy this rod and like the idea of ordering a second foot
and filing it down.
I looked a some of my older fly reels and found a Martin 66 that was even thicker than the CFO. It is not a very expensive reel, but must have been a
challenge to use for some in the past.

I have a CFOIII disc whose foot is noticeably thicker on one side than the other (!). I haven't tried to flip the foot around as it fits the seat on the
rod that I use it on (barely), but you might give this a try on your reel.

I have the same problem, but with a Battenkill Barstock. The sliding band will not go on securely enough and after about the first hour or less of fishing,
the reel falls off the reel seat. I place it back on, work the sliding band with force and it stays on the rest of the day. The unfortunate part to this is
that it has exposed the bare metal on the reel foot (the BS reel foot has a black finish); but it's just a very small spot.

Had the same problem,used1/2in. by 6in. strips of emery cloth, stating with coarse and then fine. Work the strips along the rounded side . I think they look
fine. Jim

Very common problem. First check to see if the foot is attached with an offset or an inline screw set (not all CFOs have an offset screw set). If they're
inline, you can see if Orvis has an old Madison reel foot (not the Pflueger but the later 80s-90s vintage reel). It will fit the CFO perfectly, and is slim
enough to fit most reel seats. The only drawback ... the Madison foot appears to be cast while the CFO foot is machined.

I had a similar problem with a Galvan reel on a five weight rod that I made for my self. I had filed the foot down and re-worked the maple spacer. I fianlly
solved it by leaving the reel on the hood of the rental car as I was leaving the water one night. I DO NOT suggest this approach, although someone on the
front range ended up with a nice reel and a Wulff LB 5 line. Like my pal 'Possum Lewis used to tell me "if you're gonna be dumb, you gotta be
tough". Good luck with which ever route you chose.

Tarheel...I have a solution to your reel problem...change allegiance to Florida State....all fishing related problems go away, however you will probably drink
more, which could or could not be a bad deal.
On a more serious note ...really glad others are having the same problem...I found a trashed CFO reel in a junk store last year (run over by car) bought it....sanded and polished the reel foot, switched mine ....problem gone and I still have the original. Monty Montana |

I see we have another pinto bean in the ol' comedy chili. The only reason we allowed FSU into the ACC was to beat clem-tek in football every year. (The
greatest statistic in all of sports is clem-tek's basketball record in Chapel Hill.) If Bobby Bowden doesn't start whipping his kid a little more
often, some changes will have to be made. Two years ago I built a plant in Tallahassee, now I see where their only fly shop has closed it's doors. Of
course, there's always salt water. If I didn't love trout so dearly, I could see myself with a real tarpon jones. Tight Lines.
