Is that in his new biography? Interesting. It looks like a bamboo rod.

This is how he told the story of what you may call his "last straw." Came from an internet source. Not sure if he was fly fishing at the time, but
he does now fly fish. When one thinks about it, one can understand how fly fishing can aid in a rehab effort. Seemed to work for him.
"Early in the morning a few days later, wearing my new thermal underwear, I crept out of the house to go fishing on the River Wey. I had some new equipment, including two rods. On the opposite bank were a couple of professional fishermen, with a tent and everything beautifully laid out. They were watching me. I was drunk, and I had just about managed to get my gear set up when I lost my balance and fell onto one of the new rods, breaking it clean off at the handle. I saw the fishermen look away in embarrassment. That was it for me. The last vestige of my self-respect had been ripped away. Being a good fisherman was the one place where I still had some self-esteem. I called Roger and told him: "You're right. I'm in trouble. I need help." |

I recall him endorsing T&T bamboo in one of their brochures several years ago.

I don't know how's the Eric's knowledge about bamboo fly rods...but if it is only 10 or 20% regarding his knowledge in guitar playing...he would be
one of the best ...
I'm a Clapton's fan...I can't help myself...

He was on Larry King the other night and when King asked about his fly fishing for trout,Clapton casually mentioned that he really loved fishing the Test.Of
course it helps when you have enough money that you could OWN the Test and the Itchen if you had a mind to! They can talk about Hendryx all
they want(he was an innovator) but Jimi couldn't hold a candle to Clapton or Eddie VanHalen when it wringing those Fenders

Welp, Don't need to get anybody started! It's already been decided for us. Guitar Player magazine did a poll several years back on the greatest rock
guitarist of all time....hands down winner> Eddie VanHalen!Wasn't taking anything away from Jimi,I'll be the 1st to admit that when he came on the
scene he pushed guitar playing into areas that had never been seen before

I don't think we should get into comparing guitarists in terms of their playing - let's leave that to everyone on the Telecaster Discussion Page
ReIssue (TDPRI). But I have no problem comparing guitar players as fly fishermen - now that has some substance!

Also, you can't forget Charlie Christian, Eddie Cochran, Les Paul, John Lee Hooker and David St. Hubbins as the innovators of their time. They may not be
Hendrix or Clapton, but, without them, there would be no Hendrix or Clapton.

I believe that 'Slowhand' owns (and fishes) a number of very classy cane rods including South Creek, Tom Moran, T&T, etc.
Roger Daltrey actually owned a Trout fishery over here for a considerable time and may well still. |

Re: Comparing Guitarists | #17 | ||

This reminds me of the time a few years ago when I witnessed a fabulous, relatively unknown blues/rock guitarist, Jimmy Thackery (formerly of the Nighthawks)
rock the house at a nightclub in Plains, PA. It was as fine a display of guitar virtuosity as I have ever seen. He played fast, he played slow, and was
absolutely channeling Hendrix at the end of the set. I was in the restroom during the break and overheard a conversation between Jimmy and a couple of
inebriated fans. "Wow", said one of them, "you're as good as Clapton!". Jimmy responded, "hey, I think I know you guys! Don't
you owe me some money?"
Musicians like Clapton would be the first to tell you that there are many unheralded guitar heroes out there. The list could go on and on. |

Wow another Human Being who has seen the Nighthawk, starring the amazing tatooed man!! Truly on e of my favorite bands, saw them many times in my wasted
youth. I agree on the comparisons though, I like Jazz and Classical Guitar, Love a really good blazing metal head at times and justplain love really technical
guitar, and yet I have to tip my hat to Johnny Ramone, the three chord wonder because he made the music just plain fun.
To keep this related, picking the "greatest" guitar player would be like going to Langs this weekend and getting a consensus on the greatest fly rod ever made or the best taper. You are really just trying to start a fist fight. Tight lines folks and see anyone at langs on Saturday? |

I have a friend from Mexico, he plays mostly traditional Mexican and folk music. Watching him play is amazing!!!
My brush with "Slowhand" goes back to my short college days in Poghkeepsie, NY a bar called "The Chance" brought in many national acts as well as many unknowns, which for the most part were students out of the music schools of New York city, these guys would come up and play some phenominal music. One evening there was a group there doing alot of Yard Birds, Cream, and classic Clapton the stuff was amazing. Anyway the band starting introducing the members, and brought forward their special guest - Eric Clapton. Very intimate setting as ther were maybe 50 people in attendance, he did some new solo accoustics and played along with the band some more. He end with Layla, watching him and the concentration as he got into it was truley amazing. Pete |
