Posts: 15 10/31/2007 14:44	Tags : None Hello all, Can some one advise me on cleaning, polishing some used stripper guides. I have quite a few older agates guides that are battled scared and need polishing. Appear to be NS, some guides required a little cleaning, light polishing but other need more serious attention. Have scratches, rough feet, a bend or two. Also, I have many non agate stripper guides that require same type of treatment. I cleaned them or soaked them with a vanished stripper and that removed the gunk. I have a dremel tool with different polishing felt & cloth wheels (felt & cloth) but need a little help. I believe many of these guides were not highly polished to begin with if that helps. Most grateful for any suggestions or directions. Longdaleflyfisher, RG

Posts: 1036 10/31/2007 15:00	You probably have quite a few Agatine guides, the synthetic version of the Agate,,, not as bright. Try soaking the guide in Cascade. (the dish washing detergent) It does an amazing job of cleaning.

However, I hope some one can provide some advice on the types of polishing compounds and felts for the rough, scratched ones and exposed solder. Yes, I do have a few of the agatine, glass, guides as well a lot of older carbide ones. I am afraid that I might use an aggressive polish on a felt wheel and damage them. The designs vary quite a bit and are very interesting. Thanks, LDFF

Posts: 464 10/31/2007 18:26	I de gunk them in a jar of acetone, But you seem to have gotten this far. I use a polishing buff in a Dremel w/ red rouge. Makes for a nice shine and hurts nothing. Most of the work I do w/ a 1" wheel but I use a bullet nose to get into some of the tight spots. I custom "Grind" the bullet nose buffs w/ some 80 grit paper to get the right sized tips. AgMD

The bullet nose buffer sounds like a great idea. Modifying it, I can see how it would work right-o-way. Again Thanks, LDFF

Posts: 125 11/03/2007 23:15	What I have done is soak the guide over night in liquid jewelry cleaner, which is readily available in jewelry stores that carry diamonds (the last jar I got the store manager just gave it to me at no charge, I think she hopes to see me next month when I go Christmas shopping for my wife) and after drying with a soft cloth if any further cleaning or polishing is needed it is time for the dremel as described by kimk
