Have owned two Gallas rods. His tapers are is own and he builds everything on the rod (except the ferrules)including of coarse the blank.
John's workmanship is excellent. His Ausable which is 7'9" three piece for a five has a med. fast taper and is a great looking and casting rod. .. His flamed rods are really something to look at. Waiting on his 7'9" parabolic five weight which is one of his most popular tapers. I have fished this rod and it is a great all around fly rod. If you are ever in the Catskills look up Larry McCarthy at Beaverkill Traders. Larry sells used tackle and he turmed me on to John Gallas. Larry's favorite Gallas is the 7'9" Parabolic. After casting his I had to own one. Larry would be glad to have you cast his Gallas. Larry is also totally honest and great to do business with. Larry really knows fly tackle and I learn something new everytime I visit.. Have heard great things about John's work for years from many of the Catskill guys. Can see why. He is great to do business with and really knows his stuff. No boasting or self aggrandizing with John. He is the real deal. Really feel that his work will be considered collectable in the future. bob |

Regarding John Gallas rods I am mistaken. He does build his ferrules. John also does wonderful restoration work.

I'm also on John's list for the parabolic 7' 9" #5. After speaking with John about his rods, he mentions this as one of his favorites.

Pete, John Gallas has a unique perspective on Arthritics and after the Lawn Casting he strongly encouraged me to stay away from his Parabolic, which is what I
went to see him about in the first place.

Last summer I had the pleasure to visit John at his shop in Danbury as I wanted to cast his various actions to decide which to purchase. During my visit I
asked him where he got all of the components he used, and to my surprise he spent the next two hours teaching me how to make caps, ring seats, ferrules, use of
knurling tools, etc...on his lathe. He patiently spent time answering all my questions. This man went out of his way to make a me feel valued and I gained an
incredible appreciation of what he puts into his craft.
As stated he does make his own tapers and has a very detailed understanding of both parabolic and traditional catskill formulas. If you like a parabolic action you will feel the rod deep into the butt. I chose a 7ft 4 weight with a med fast action. Looking forward to delivery next summer. I honestly can't say enough about him as a businessman and a craftsmen. He was very impressive. |

... John seems a really super nice guy and extremly knowledgeable.
Only difference is, I ordered a 7'9" 5 wt based on casting John's personal fishing rod (a 7'6" version) |

I've had the pleasure of casting the Auguste One's 7'9" Gallas and it is as fine a rod as you could want. A pure joy to cast. I covet it.
Nice fish, Len. I covet it as well... Bob |

Seriously though, you should meet John; there simply is not a nicer guy, and one who is genuinely interested in helping you get the rod you want/need. Ken |

Nice looking fish - tricos still on in NY/PA? Was that the successful pattern? Amazing the amount of good fishing that is within a long day trip from
Manhattan.

First,i have no financial interest with Mr.Gallas,i just happen to like rods he makes. He is now offering Halstead Tribute rods,i think they are very
interesting, allthought i have only seen pictures of them.
I have copied John's text here, and a picture of the rod. Lasse
Introducing the Halstead Tribute
Series
tapers with traditional design offered in a variety of Series of rod groupings. In addition to the regular catalogued rods, this is the introducion of another unique and select group of classic cane fly rods. Named the Halstead Tribute Series, these rods are patterned after the original parabolic models made by George H. Halstead of Danbury, Connecticut during the "Golden Age" of classic bamboo rodmaking (1937-1960).* The intention is the reproduction of an otherwise nearly unobtainable line of fly rods. Original Halstead rods are exceedingly rare and expensive, thereby minimally available.
The Halstead Tribute Series, comprising the rarest of the rare parabolic rod models, include: a light-in-the-hand 7'1" 4wt; a strong 8'1" 5wt; and a full-flexing 8'6" 6wt. Configured in two piece, two tip format, these classic rods conform to the original Halstead tapers in flamed cane. The furnishings consist of: blued, Halstead-style, stepped ferrules; an agate stripping guide; bronzed snake guides; brown silk wraps with green & red accents; and a mahogany reel seat with bright nickel-silver slide band & cap or polished aluminum screw-locking hardware displaying the characteristic, Halstead-style, dual knurling. Each rod bears a consecutive serial number pertaining to this series. Halstead Tribute rods are
priced at $1850, $1950, and $2100, respectively.
classic rodmakers from the Danbury area which also includes Halstead's colleague, H.S. Gillum. Also, through Halstead's step-son, I obtained the last original, unfinished rod blanks from Halstead's shop. I produced a limited edition series of these rods several years ago.* They are unmistakably identifiable by two sets of stampings, "G.H. Halstead Rod" and the "J.W. Gallas Rod Co." logo, bearing credit to each maker. The Halstead Tribute Series is a continuation in this effort of classic rodmaking.
and bamboo rod lovers in the same tradition of past rodmakers. I now look forward to adding the unique Halstead Tribute rods whose tapers have not been available
since the master's death in 1961.
