Heddon # 50 president 7'6" 2/2 | #761 | ||

Went to lang's today just to wander the dealer's room rather than sit thru the auction. I was searching for Heddons or Edwards 8' or under.
Amazingly I stumbled upon an all original model # 50 President, 7'6", 2/2, 0 3/4F with original B&T, complete with labl & tag. Very reasonable
price from a couple out of Maine. I would post photos but can't seem to do it with my Mac and Safari 2.04.

I haven't held her yet, but she's on her way to me shortly. It's an 8' 3/2 FE Thomas taper for a DT-5 by Chris Carlin of Far North
Rodsmiths. I think she's beautiful....
And her reel:

The reel seat is amboyna. I asked Chris if he could find a piece of wood with both reddish and golden hues to compliment and
"bring out" the Cardinal tipped with Antique Gold wraps. This piece of wood is what he found.

SS,
That is one handsome rod. Did you have a chance to cast any of Chris's other tapers before deciding on the FET? If so what were your impressions? thanks for the beautiful pic bill |

SS,
Congratulations on one truly beautiful piece of work! Wow... I personally love Amboyna and the hues it will give you. I'm going to have to get me a chunk of that stuff for my little shop. I have a nice chunk of East Indian Rosewood and Cocobollo and such but none of that. That's a beautiful piece of crafting by a fine rodmaker. Keep your eyes on that Carlin guy! Jeremy. |

Would love to hear what forum members purchased in the way of cane rods at Lang's. I wound up with the Bradford Traditionalist and the Leonard 100 year
Commemorative Rod. Anyone else own or has even heard of John Bradford's model the Traditionalist? From what little I gather, John may have used this name
for a few rods before he settlled on the name Legacy and elected to use the bronze snake guides, rather than shiny ones, as he evolved from the Talisman model
to the Legacy model rod. Ric

Just arrived after a long wait. JD Wagner presentation: 7'3" 3/2 4 weight Quad with ebony spliced/swelled butt foregrip, ebony reel seat spacer,
bright nickel/silver hardware, black guides and intermediate wraps, engraved ferrules, reel seat, and butt cap. Will have to wait until spring to take her
out, but beautiful....just beautiful.

Damn! nccavalier,
That is one Gorgeous Wagner Quad. I absolutely love the engraving and how
the bright hardware really shines back dropped by the Ebony reel seat.
The Ebony inlays in the swelled butt are elegant and really set the rod off beautifully! And the short Quad ferrules compliment the overall appearance of this Masterpiece, you definitely have a winner there. I have a very rare Black McNeese Trout Model reel on the for sale board (No ruthless pumping intended ), that would simply no longer be for sale if I owned that rod. What a matched
pair that would make!
The gut wrenching anticipation of having to wait until Spring to fish it; would be like discovering you have a winning lottery ticket, only to find out, you can't cash it in due to the lottery offices being closed down so all the employees could take two weeks off for the Christmas Holidays! Of course it's still Mid 80's here in the Phoenix area! The Black River up in the White Mountains of Arizona is still very much fishable, and is loaded with the recently de-listed Endangered Wild Apache Trout. Yes that would be an invitation!
If you discover that simply waiting another day is too long to fish that spectacular rod, you just let me know. I'll pick you up at the airport, by the way you're welcome to stay at Casa de Lancaster's, although it's no 5 star Marriott, it's warm, safe, and comfortable, and the wife is an awesome cook. I also volunteer to be your unofficial Pescado guide, and photographer to document your first Wild Apache Trout caught on that beautiful Wagner Quad. Now how's that sound for an offer that's too good to pass up? Oh, yeah, yeah! Shame on you! First of all, for making the rest of us drool uncontrollably, and secondly, for coercing us into extending offers to fish for Wild Trout!

Lovely rod.
Terry, how long have lived in AZ? I fished the Rim and White Mountains hundreds of times when I lived in AZ. The high country of AZ is a lovely relatively undiscovered fly fishing destintion. Anyone who is heading to AZ should take him up on his offer. The Sedona area is scenic and remains fishable almost year round HC |

Rick Sorensen of Westslope kindly sold me this Kagerow Kei
Penta 2/2 3wt that has a sweet medium fast parabolic action. The finish of this rod is simply the best I have seen, period. Perfect gunmetal bluing to ferrules
and rings, very dark flamed flats all angular and sharp, wraps with varnish terminating razor sharp, mirror tips, bronzed guides, ebony ferrule plug and reel
seat end cap that is so smooth you'd swear its metal. Had great fun casting the rod last weekend with my pals Charlie & Adi and caught a few fish too.

We also had fun with my Aroner Hunt 7'6" 3/2 paired with a Saracione. A very smooth rod with medium
fast dry fly action. Watch the nice bend!
More stories in our local forum. Thanks to all who made and who sold me the beautiful rods. As you can see, they are well fished and enjoyed by our cane group. http://flyfishingsg.proboards38.com/index.cgi?board=Bamboo&action=display&thread=1193555609 http://flyfishingsg.proboards38.com/index.cgi?board=Bamboo&action=display&thread=1193550336 |

My new rods: From Lang's, the 7'6" Bradford Traditionalist and the 8'6' Leonard 100 year Commemorative Rod. From Len Codella, the Gillum
7'6" No. 539 rod, beautifully refinished by John Bradford. I must try to get John's restoration notes. The rod is very much in the Payne/Bradford
tradition. Of note, in reading Marty Keane's book, Classic Rods and Builders, he comments fondly about his 7'6' Gillum, No. 540, making me wonder
how closely the two rods are in tapers and date of production, etc... The Gillum just acquired, per John Bradford, was refinished in 1994 by John for D.J.
Duck. What respect from one rod builder to another to entrust one's personal Gillum to another builder for refinishing.
