all around travel rod -OR- "only one rod" |

What are your thoughts on an inexpensive travel rod for all around use. Mostly eastern but potentially a western trip once or twice. I'm thinking of
something like an H-I Canada creek 8' 3/2. Won't cry (too much) if it's damaged or lost. Short enough for creeks, but big enough for rivers and
streamers. What are my options? thanks

Consider an 8-foot Battenkill. You can fish a wide variety of lines, it's weatherproof and there are a jillion of them out there. The only problem is
portability with the 2-piece version.

I have a couple Battenkills but the 2pc is just not portable. I'd love to find a 3 pc but for me the prices are just too high. I do think impregnated is a
great thing especially for travel, or camping& canoeing. That's why I'm thinking about a better H-I.
Any thoughts on an all around length vs weight?

Mike Brooks McKenzie NW ~~ 8', 3/2, Permacane, 5 wt ~~ go anywhere, do anything rod.
The Orvis Battenkill is also a good suggestion. |

Dennis Stone(tapermaker) 7'9 4/2 5 wt. built off a Whitehead taper. One superior casting rod at a very reasonable price. I love mine.

There is nothing wrong with the rod you had in mind. It will do what you want and not break the bank. I am not sure why others have suggested you buy something
for double the money. dave

You should be able to pick up an 8 ft. Phillipson for a decent price, especially a one tipped rod. They are fantastic rods to fish. A low end
1 3/4F Heddon (10, 13, 14) might be an excellent choice as well if you can find one. CWood |

I have owned and fished the granger 8040 and Phillipson Pacemaker 8' 3pc and they are excellent 8' rods. My personal favorite 8' er is the Heddon
1 3/4F. It feels livelier in the hand to me, slightly quicker and more sensitive also. All 3 are great rods and won't break the bank in lower grades. They
are getting harder to find in good condition and the higher grades are now getting pricey.

The South Bend 291 is a 7.5-foot, four-piece rod that was marketed as a pack rod. I think they all were single tip. Mine can throw a five or a six, better with the five, with a sweet, very pleasant action, a bit better than the 290 I've cast. I haven't used it very much because I got it to pack in to the Neversink Gorge or the head of the reservoir, a couple of hikes I haven't gotten around to recently. They aren't the most common rods around, but there are enough of them that I blundered into one when I was actually looking for it. You should be able to get one for $300 or less; I did. You might need to get a case for it. I'm not sure if they were originally sold with one. The case my 291 currently resides in is its own strange story. tight lines, leadwing |

Wow that 291 sounds perfect,
in any case a 2nd tip may be a requirement for a travel rod. I don't mind leaving a day of fishing early, but If I was halfway across the country a broken tip on one rod would suck. 8' Grangers or Phillipsons would be nice, but the prices have gotten pretty steep lately for those lengths. thanks everyone, keep the suggestions coming.
