Breaking News: Silk line casts farther than modern plastic line! |
Lead | ||

Well, we expected as much, of course, but this was a pretty fair trial between the two lines. See Silk casts Farther than SYLK

It would have been more interesting to see a conventional plastic line in the fray. Real Silk beating out plastic Sylk is one thing. Real Silk going head to head against a conventional plastic line such as the Orvis wonderline (or a new
line like the 3M sharkskin) would probably be a tougher test for real silk.

Kai,
Would the plastic line makers admit that there exists "a conventional plastic line"? I think not |

So what?
Is anyone buying a silk line because it casts farther? Yes, silk lines are denser. That's why they fly through the air better than bulkier plastics. It's also why they don't float as well. Next item. |

Yep, cast a silk against an intermediate and you'll get closer performance.

Try impregnating your silk line with red mucilin you will be blown away.Don

I was there, an interesting exercise in casting - The whole of both contests.

I agree with Kai. I think it would be a different story if a silk line went up against a premium plastic line made for distance casting. The new Airflow lines
come to mind. Don't bash me yet!! I have a Phoenix and love it! Wouldn't trade it for the world. There's no denying the fact, though, that these
new plastic lines cast pretty darn well, roll out well, mend well, cut through wind ...uh, fairly ok (still need work in that area) and require a helluva lot
less maintenance.
HOWEVER, at the prices they are asking for these new lines, I'm not running out any time soon to buy one. If I want to see how they cast, I ask my friends if I can try their's out. If I like how the line cast's I ask how muchee? When they hesi-hesi-hesitate and tell me almost $70 bucks, I do the Stimey head nod with a do-whut at the end and proceed to reel in anotherfish on my 6 year old Phoenix
Besides, how many fish do we really actually cast to outside of 40 feet in fresh water and think we can "actually" get the fly to ride well enough to hook the fish?

shooting silk - problems | #8 | ||
|
I must be doing something wrong, because I find that I do not shoot line well with my true silk lines. They seem to stick in the guides. I am wondering if I am
applying too much Mucillin. Can one put too much on? Do you need to polish the line after putting the Mucilin on? Is it not good to put the Mucillin on days in
advance of fishing? I love these lines but wish I could figure out how to get them to perform better for me.

Only lightest coat of mucilin is necessary, apply mucilin with the pad provided and then wipe with a soft cloth to remove excess. |

Go light on the Mucilin, if you think there isn't enough It's still too much.
No problem with applying ahead of time, I'll dry my lines and apply and then put them on the reel ready to go fishing. Pete |

I had to comment since I was in the casting finals and cast both lines with Tim's Rod. The silk line definitely blew past the best efforts people could do with the SYLK. This was with a standard Phoenix WF-5 that really wasn't fully broken in. Olaf provided a new line that really wasn't cast as much as it should have been to give maximum performance. Now the comment was made to use a high performance plastic line vice SYLK. I definitely know the results would still be the same. Now, also let me also put on a performance Silk line and go head to head with a plastic line. I just happen to have almost a full set of Hedge Taper Silk Lines. Now we are talking serious distance. Marvin Hedge set the world record with a bamboo rod and his real silk lines in 1934 by casting 147'. We know what the result will be - Silk wins again! The real issue with distance casting that gets lost in the argument is the small diameter of a real silk line vice any plastic line. The line weights are the same for the first 30' but you have a smaller line diameter to cut through the air better. Less air resistance makes for greater distance. I know my friend Reed is grinning since he started the post. Chris |
