CRACKING FERRULE WRAPS |
Lead | ||
|
I have noticed that on a few of my rods the wraps have cracked where the ferrules are wrapped to the rod. This happens on both the male and female ferrule
side. I have spoken with a couple of rod makers that seem to think that this is not a problem and that it is a universal thing that just happens to all rods
regardless of the maker. I would like to know if anyone else has had experience with this? Do you all have rods with this similar issue and if so do you
still fish them like this or do you have them repaired before fishing them? One of the rod makers that I called said all his rods have this and he has not had
any problems with moisture or any other problems for that matter. However, on one of the rods you can see the ferrule has sliped which has increased the gap
in the crack and infact the ferrule is now loose. I noticed this after I came off the river a couple weeks ago. Is there anything I can do to prevent this
from happening? Am I fishing some way that is causing this to happen? Sorry about all the questions but any help would be very appreciated.
Thanks, Seabass

I have seen it a lot. I think most of it is caused by flexing at that point. I would reset the ferrule that has moved, it obviously broke the bond. Maybe apply
some varnish into the crack for protection if the ferrule is not moving.

Probably the only reliable way to avoid this is not to wrap up over the guides at at. For some reason it became fashionable to wrap up them to show that
this rod had nicely thinned tabs on its' ferrules instead of thick hard edges like the cheap ones. Good idea that never worked out. Far better to wrap the
ferrule with one wrap and have a trim come up to meet it...provide a natural crack between the two colors that looks normal.

I've seen a number of old & new rods with the cracking at the ferrules due to flexing. I have been able to nearly eliminate the problem on my rods by
being extra dilligent on preping the tabs & getting a good glue bond under them. I hse epoxy. Several rods have been fished for years and are not showing
stress cracks.

As has been said , most rods have this problem. I had a Dutch rodmaker stay with me a few years ago and he showed me what he did to overcome the problem and it
has worked for me although it is a little hard to explain in words. Also it does not work if you wish to use transparent wraps . It involves using a strip of
brown " butchers paper" which is sticky one side about 1/8 inch wide and tapering the ends. the sticky side is wet and then it it carefully wrapped
spiraling down over the ferrule under where the thread will be. It is wrapped down over top 1/4 inch of cane. Once this is dry it can be sanded down and
provides a smooth surface for the wrap to sit on and a smooth transition from the ferrule to the cane. Ask any questions as this may be a inadequate
explanation.

This has happened to every bamboo I have owned, Sharpes, Orvis, Leonard, ect. It appears to me it just happens because the ferrule does not flex and the bamboo
does, so the uneven bend at that point will crack the varnish. I have even seen this on a couple of older Orvis graphites too, since the wraps were coated with
varnish, not epoxy. On the graphites, it happened on the reinforced glass ferrule on the rod tip of the older style Orvis graphites. It never seemed to hurt
the graphite or bamboo rods, tho.

Hi Guys, Heddon #50's were double wrapped at the ferrules with less of this problem. Jay Edwards

Of all my rods the Bradford Legacy shows the least amount of cracking at the ferrule wrap. I talked to John about how he prepared the ferrule. He starts with a
tight but not too tight dry fit. With the inside of the ferrule scored and tabs feathered and clean he applies a Golfsmith epoxy. He then wraps the tabs with
string and allows to thoroughly dry. He pins the ferrule. His wraps are preserved with Varathane 900 (4coats) and then he uses Last n' Last spar varnish.
Notice I said "the least amount of cracking", as it appears to me that any rod that is fished consistently will eventually develop cracks in the
ferrule wraps. Of course, a loose ferrule bond, bamboo with greater flex, or thicker ferrule tabs and relatively softer bamboo will all exacerbate the cracking
tendency. I also have a Heddon #50 that I restored, and it is double wrapped. So far it has not cracked, however it has been fished very sparingly. On the
other hand, Orvis ferrules have been double wrapped forever, and they all crack.

It happens to graphite & fiberglass rods too. A non-issue IMO...
