Six rivet were changed to 3 rivet in the early 1960's.
Desirability is sometimes based on age hence 6 rivet reels are often more valuable and of course the strength factor. |

This link has a fairly good recap of the history of the reels.

As said above, I think it's mostly an indication of age. Based on observation and use over many years, I wouldn't say there's any significant
difference in functionality. A few other points, from the cluster of '60s reels below. These are all R-L convertible reels, Akron O, but before the
"DA" marking that some collectors fret about. I purchased the one on the left new about 1963; the one underneath it, also 6-rivet, is about the same
time, and the one on the right, maybe a few years later, 3-rivet. You can see the change in latch-cover graphics that seems to coincide with the 3 rivet
change. Also note that the spool-mounted click plunger (opposite the latch lever) is open on the spool face in the 6-rivet spools. In the three rivet, it is
capped, (it's enclosure, spring and the plunger itself are removable as one unit). Reels of the six-rivet era had the "bright" spindle boss or
dome. About the time they went to three-rivet, the spindle boss was finished black like the rest of the backplate. Finally, just to tweak another little point
of production variants, both the 6-rivet reels have a screw-mounted foot. The other one has the crimped-on (spot-weld, maybe?) foot, so evidently this
variation (my other 3 rivet Pfluegers are this way also) was introduced about the same time, mid-60's.
Well, I've got time to throw in another photo. It includes the backside of two of the reels above: lower right, 6-rivet, "bright" spindle boss, screw-attached foot; lower left, 3 rivet, black finished spindle boss, crimp foot. Top, slightly later (probably late 60's) 1494 1/2, "DA" three rivet with latch medallion graphics of that era, covered click plunger, crimp foot.
