What's Your Favorite 5-weight Plastic Line for Your Bamboo Rods? |
Lead | ||
|
Just wondering what your favorite 5-weight line(s) are for your bamboo rods? I need to buy another line, and am curious what the members of the Forum use.
Thanks! |

The majority of my rod collection are 5 wt's and the lines I use are SA Ultra II and III, SA Mastery, Cortland 444, Rio, Wulff TT, Orvis Clear Creek,
vintage silk and Hardy lines all work very well.

I find the Cortland 444 Peach consistently works best on my bamboo rods.

Can't get them anymore, so I hoard using my favorite Masterlines - something about the bumpy finish also helps shooting, and perhaps Airflo's Ridge
Line and SciAng's Sharkskin are trying different morphologies to get the same result. As a consolation, I often gravitate to the venerable Cortland 444
Peach, which is one of those few things in the sport that doesn't seem to have changed much.
If the peach color is too flambuoyant for you, Hook & Hackle sells their olive colored private brand, often on sale for a bit less. I can't distinguish the handling of these from the peach. I'm still trying to decide where Cortland's SYLK fits in my mindspace - I do want to support anyone who is trying to help align with the cane spirits. SYLK is silk-like, but definitely not silk - it is skinnier (less air resistant) and wonderfully limp, even in the cold, but it is not one for distance. McKenzie produced Masterline-like bumpy lines and marketed them for bamboo - they work fine for that, but are kinky in the cold. Anyone know whether SciAng or Cortland is the maker of the Ron Kusse lines? tl les |

I always wondered why people talk about brands, types, memory , etc. but NEVER about the diameter of the different lines.
Some brands make lines that are thicker than others. We are talking about very small differences, yet difference enough to make a rod feel different when casting. For example the Cortland 444 series the diameter of the belly portion is bigger than a SA line. If any one has a micrometer, it would be nice to have a list of tip and belly diameter of the brands & types of line. Jay |

I like the new Rio Selective Trout 2. They used a new coating for 08, and it's very supple, floats better and shoots better. Nice line for plastic or
bamboo.

I am surprised no one has mentioned the Sage Quiet Taper lines ( I think the original ones were made by SA but Rio makes them now). They work very well with
bamboo. I use them with rods form 1 to 5 wt with great results. The original ones were only WF but the newer ones can be had also in DT. Thinner than the usual
plastic lines they are a joy both short and long. You do have to put up with their memory and they really should be stretched out when they come off the reel
for the first time but they are worth the trouble IMHO.

The Quiet DT II lines, made by Rio, don't have the memory problems that the old SA ones did. They are very supple and float well. The new Sharkskin lines
are the most memory-free lines I have ever seen, and even the 5wt lands on the water very lightly.

Hi like H&H Hi-floater for the quality/price ratio.
Rio Selective trout is a nice line. Airflo Ridge lines really zing through the guides. |

cross creek one:
I fish a 2wt DT QT II that I bought this year (all the others are WF QT I). It still has a fair amount of memory. If I don't stretch it out at the beginning of the day it comes off the reel in coils for the first couple of hours of casting.

As much trouble as some fellow board members have had with the Cortland Sylk fly lines... they're my "go to's" for most light line
fishing. 444 peach is my second choice.

Rio Windcutter is at the top of my list. It has a light tip and heavier belly than other lines. For some reason this combination is well suited to bamboo.

Rio Selective trout in WF...loads the rods well in close but doesn't overload the rod at 40+ feet. this line floats great.
2nd choice Cortland Peach 444 in WF, wish it floated better, tip starts to sink very quickly, even after cleaning. I don't think that the Sylk is loads the rod well enough unless you get 30+ feet of line out and doesn't float that great either, it is good in cold weather though. Dave |

I haven't tried Sylk, but love silk. I still use plastic on some rods though and go with either a DT 444 Peach or a Wulff TT.

Airflo Ridgeline. I also use the Cortland 444 Sylk, but the Airflo has seen much more use of late.
