Jim,
Can I suggest you visit a UK based forum for advise? I would recommend a PM to 3lbGrayling on http://www.flyforums.co.uk - he has a wealth of knowledge about fishing in Scotland. Good luck, Adrian. |

Don,
It looks like we'll be staying close to Inverness for one week and then the Northwest coast the second week. Brown trout fishing in small to medium sized streams is my preference. Jim |

By J. H. Hall is a classic book on fishing a small brown trout river - The Truim - just south of Inverness. It's a tributary of the Spey. If you
haven't read it, might make a good book to take on the trip!
Jim, Check your PM. BTW - a good site: http://www.fishing-scotland.net/index.htm

Wefishcane, Most fishing in Scotland is controlled Association water or Estate lets for salmon fishing. You will not get get on the main rivers for trout as they will
all have been let for lots of £££ to the salmon fishers and for that reason, they rightly will have full rights over the beats. You could try a small stream
for trout, and I have fished the river Livet near Inverness several years ago. I fished the Avon for salmon (prounounced Arn) at the same time, so you could do
too. The Spey is the main river, the Avon is the tributary and the Livet is a tributary of the Avon. I stayed at the Minmore House Hotel http://www.minmorehousehotel.com/index1.htm and it was very good. Not sure how it is now as it was several
years ago, but the link might whet your appetite. It has fishing on the Avon and the Livet. You could also visit the Glen Livet distillery for a wee dram or
two!

Creaky,
I enjoyed reading Fishing a Highland Stream. The wind and rain he fought through reminds me of my fishing experiences on the rivers along the Western coast of Washington. I will make it a point to drive through Dalwhinnie and look for the landmarks along the Truim Hall describes in his book. Lunch at his favorite lodge along the river will be something to look forward to as well. Thanks again for the recommendation. Piglegs, The Minmore House looks like it would be a good location to spend a couple of days fishing while my wife enjoys the countryside. More information on your experience fishing the Livet would be helpful. Did you use the local guide and if so would you recommend it? Off line you can reach me at holmjb@aol.com. Jim |

Hi Jim,
The Livet is a small stream - I used an 8' 4/5# when I was there, and I remember thinking I should have brought something a bit shorter as part of the beat I fished was in an enclosed treed canopy. The hotel could provide a guide I'm sure but I didn't use one as the holding spots were easily identifed by the rising fish! The fish were mainly small wild brownies, but after rain, there would be a chance of a salmon. If you want to fish exclusively for salmon, you would need to take a beat on the Avon or Spey - day tickets might be available although the Estate's usually let the fishing by the week - and expect to pay handsomely for it. Trouting on the Livet was very cheap though. In Scotland, you won't need a licence from the water/environment agency to fish, but you will need a permit from the landowner and the hotel will sort this out for you. The nearest airport is Inverness, and the drive to the hotel will less than an hour. Happy new year! |

About 15 years ago I stayed at a hotel that had a nice beat on the upper Don, so no license needed. The Don is not far from Inverness so its in your area of
consideration. The Don (where I fished it) is a nice meadow stream with lots of nice gentle riffles and long pools. Easy wading and plenty of brown trout
(obviously stocked). Almost all were in the 10 inch class with one exception. It got away but I saw enough of him to estimate his size as in excess of 15
inches.
I also intended to fish the Trium, but the water was so low I did not bother. But its a nice stream, emerging literally from underneath the Dalwhinnie Distillery. I did, however, manage to land a nice bottle of their single malt. If I were to plan a trip to Scotland my first choice of where to fish would be to stay at Inns or hotels that have beats on a stream (usually no charge). Next, I would inquire at fly shops who sell beat permits. Its not a matter of buying a license to fish open water, only a local Scot would likely know of such water. And fly shops can only sell beats as authorized. I remember one case of a fly shop right on a trout stream that could not sell me on beat on it. You might investigate Loch fishing; popular among the locals. My trip to Scotland was essentially for sight-seeing and culinary purposes, with fishing as a secondary thing. The food was much better than expected. Neither my wife nor I found Haggis to our liking; in fact found it positively awful.

Andy,
One of the hotels I'm considering is the Colquhonnie House on the upper Don. After reading your message I wondered if that was where you stayed and fished? Jim |

Jim, You know, it could have been. My wife and I had met a Brit lady of means who had several Salmon beats on a river near the Inn (Andrew Carnegie's ex Hunting Camp) where we were staying. She had her whole family along for a fishing holiday. I watched them fishing with Spey rods; all were attired in traditional Scottish duds and those black rubber hip boots. It turned out that she and her group were staying at the same Inn as we. She invited us to dine with them and we talked fishing. She had fished extensively in the U.S. and knew the kind of fishing I did, so she recommended the particular inn because of the fishing available would be of my liking. It was. I remember using an AuSable Wulff, probably a size 12. It was a killer. While I cannot be certain, the name "Colquhonnie House" sure rings a bell! I forgot to mention that the beat had its own little fishing hut with a
map displaying the beginning and end of the beat. A guide came with us to explain the boundaries and the rules; then left us to do our thing.
