16 PMD
I have done a lot of the things that Per has done to learn about rod actions: mic'ed rods, cast a lot of different makers rods (both old and new),
studied tapers and it does take a lot of time time to learn about all of this. I think the most important aspect of a rod is the action which is sorely
lacking in a lot of today's rods. People are so focused on cosmetics that the action is spared.

16 PMD,
Wow, that was really good. Really good! I've only had the chance to handle one of Pers rods and I wanted it. Unfortunately the gent didn't want to sell but only gave me it to "feel". NOt knowing anything about Brandin I remember saying "Then what did'ya let me hold it for?"...grinning!! I don't know what it is about bamboo rods. I'm just a mediocre caster but every time I go out into the yard to practice it's ALWAYS been the 'boos that I grab. I don't know why, I really don't. And they're on my mind a lot. A lot. This honestly surprises me because I love my Sages. In my tying room downstairs, I assmble them to flick around most every time I go down there. I look at them and yearn for the time when I can cut some cane. I still have order(s) out for some of the makers' rods even though I'll hopefully be able to cut my own next year. Still, if I couldn't even fish, I'd assemble, wiggle and cast them. This trully surprises me because I never thought it would touch me so! I didn't!! That Brandin post was really good! That's the spirit of bamboo as I like to feel it. My 25 yr old fly fishing son is going to inherit one _elluva lot of good rods in 40 yrs!!! Maybe 50 yrs. Jeremy. |

Traditional vs. Evolutionary rods | #28 | ||
|
One facet that 16 PMD does underscore is the development and experimentation Mr Brandin does pursue in order to, in his estimation, improve rod action and performance. I believe he along with Mario Wojnicki, the fellow at Beaverhead rods, Jim Reams, Dunsmuir rods, Montagne and a few others seem to always be evolving what a bamboo rod should/can be. Not unlike a West coast evolution in many things - California cuisine, computer industry, high tech ventures - striving for newer, improved and "better". I suppose this should be encouraged. However, stuck-in-the-mud type that I am, I find it hard to rationalize handing over 4k for a rod whose design is in the midst of its evolution, good as it may be......Perhaps it is the collectors that require the latest high-level development in cane technology who are strongly drawn to them? Many other top shelf makers seem to pursue making rods that reflect a tradition and style that is time-tested. Its already optimized, at least in the eyes
of some. They are desirable for just that reason - maybe the appearance/action of a Bob Taylor rod or a T and T Hendrickson - not hollow, no new ferrule
technologies - just solid beautiful rods with more conservative characteristics.... Probably for those that like a Southwick Harris tweed coat because they are
pretty much the same as the ones you could buy when JFK was president - and that is why many folks like them. No more R and D. Arguably not as novel and
evolutionary. They are done. They have evolved to a steady-state that is pretty optimal in the eyes of many.

I kind of agree with Creakycane on this in terms of actual fishing. I have met Per ( he lives 20 miles from me) and handled his rods as well as other
hollow-built rods. It is likely I am simply not sophisticated enough as a caster to appreciate all that is so well articulated above about Per's rods or
hollow built rods in general , but I seem to enjoy the simple qualities of my Heddons, Edwards & Thomas rods more than any I have used. I know I have never
felt " limited" in any way on a stream with a 1 3/4F 8' model 20, a Featherweight or an FET. Per is a very nice guy and excellent
fisherman/caster by all accounts . In every way his rods are well thought out and expertly crafted, he has carved a nice niche for himself in the market and I
tip my hat to acknowledge him as a true master of the craft and true innovator. I just prefer the simple magic of an old fashioned solid built rod for the
waters I frequent. My rods seem to do it all , perhaps they are a little heavier but it is not significant to me at all. I also fish fairly rough terrain and
can't imagine toting a Brandin around on it.

not that you can cast a photo, but any pic's of his rods. I like to see what good makers rods look like and liek to see quality rods even if I can not cast
them any would be great.

Those are very nice looking rods. Wow, the truncated ferrules are really short for relatively big rods.....

I'll probably get bashed for it, but I find the cork pretty mediocre, considering the going rate for these poles...

It's not that select of cork to the eye, but to tell you the truth, I like a few blems on the cork as it's better to grip.
