Hardy two/three screw latches |

I would like to know the history and significance of Hardy reel latches having two or three screws. I am learning about these reels so I can be better
informed and care for them properly.

I've seen examples of three-screw latches that date as early as 1910-11, but if I am not mistaken, this feature wasn't catalogued until 1913. The move
to the three-screw latch, which replaced various nut and screw-retaining configurations was pragmatic in nature and not only made it a breeze to R&R the
spool for line/reel maintenance purposes (spare spools, which had to be hand-fitted, were not as prevalent as today), but also put an end to the possibility of
misplacing, losing or stripping those retaining nuts/screws.
The transition to the two-screw latch mechanism took place following WW2 and though the following example (third pic) was devised sometime around late-1948, the first reel to formally incorporate the two-screw 'dust cover latch' (patent #658472) was the Princess, in 1953 ... however, as shown in the photo below, some transitional two-screw (second pic) examples preceded the aformentioned Princess by perhaps as much as seven to eight years. Though one can argue that the dust latch was superior to its predecessors, in that it did limited the access of dust, dirt, sand, etc., the move from three to two-screws was also an effective means of trimming manufacturing expenses (parts & labor). The more recent two screw latches possess a latch which is lacking the dust cover appendage (last pic).

Way to go Joe ! I think Joe has you covered on the explanation, but one thing that I don't think was really mentioned, is that although there really isn't anything
functionally better about the 3 screw latch cover reels, when comparing similar make/model/condition reels with 2 screws or 3 screws, the 3 screw version will
almost always have a higher collector value.
