What would be the proper way to retain these wraps, yet bring them to a protected condition?
Will a simple overcoat do the trick?
Thanks,
Rob

A simple overcoat will not make them look much better. You can see where the wraps are cracked and the blackening needs to be redone. In my opinion, the rod
should be stripped and rewrapped.

I am not a builder or restorer but I would say try to preserve them.
You have nothing to lose if as some say you need to strip, rewrap and refinish the rod. If you want the rod to look like it was new than rewrap and refinish but in my opinion when you rewrap and refinish you no longer have a great old rod you have a new rod that uses some of the components of an old rod. I think too many old rods are being destroyed unnecessarily rather than preserved. Some old rods are so bad that preservation is not an option but yours looks like it would be quite serviceable with some light preservation.
It seems to me that I saw a topic on this not that long ago. Maybe someone can point to it and give some tips on preservation with the least invasive techniques.

I want to maintain some of my older rods in fishable condition without loosing their original components and
wraps so I did some research on the forum and came up with some good advice from other members on ways to accomplish this.
I hope this helps you and I'm sure there is more information that has already been posted.
