Serial numbers for original ATH F-series? |
Lead | ||
|
Does anyone know what serial number signified the end of the Holland ATH F-series (Traun, Orbigo, Taupo) and the Danish Damm ATHs? Or whether there were any
features which would distinguish one or the other? I have seen some with a different font of the model name on the backplate (standard block rather than
scroll), I assume these were the later models.
Thanks, Steve

I own a first series Traun F1 (written in script below the ATH logo just under the bend at the foot) s/n is 1144, I also have the original boxes it and the
spare spool came in, the shipping label and invoice, the first series came in a black suede case with a flap that would allow you to place the case over the
reel while it was mounted on the rod and the flap would secure using the velcro fastening system used, it also has ATH design on the flag in gold. I don't
know what s/n it ended at but I got mine CA June 1992.

I own a first series ATH Rio Orbigo F2 with the same signature on the backplate as Banjo's. All black, serial no. 3458.
Bought on the secondary market and came only with a leather ATH case. Can't help with history. This is a very good thread on ATH, if you haven't seen it previously. Many knowledgable posts! http://clarksclassicflyrodforum.yuku.com/topic/8734 Bob |

Bob,
Yes, I've had a good look at this thread already, but there's no indication apart from the year the switch happened (95), and there would have been some old stock before the Danish ones began. I've also seen Damm ATHs which look (to my untrained eye) identical to ATH Design (Holland) ones in terms of colours and writing style on the backplate. There may be no true difference in the quality of the two models apart from a psychological one, but from a collectors point of view (and $ value), the original must be worth more. Steve |

Serial-Nos. of F-series | #4 | ||
|
Hi together,
the series numbers of the first reels of the F-series were 4 digits and contained the year (83..) and two digit number (..24) (f. e.)! The oldest reel (F1) of my collection has no. 8227, thus no. 27 from 1982 and by Ari't Hart has built after his information by himself. A picture is following tomorrow. Niklas |

Niklas, Thanks, however this confuses me more, as it implies that the numbering scheme changed, since banjo's and bobbeegee's original F1s with serial
numbers 1144 & 3458 do not fit into this scheme. I found a jpeg of an early F1 (I assume) http://sportingspirit.com/museum/pages/detail.html?sku=854 which has a serial
number of 0043. Nonetheless, I guess I'd like to know if a serial number can be used to distinguish Damm ATH F reels or not. Did they have their own range
of numbers of continue from ATH Design's? Thanks, Steve

Maybe I can be of some assistance here. The oldest F-models are recognized by their drag knob with the rubber toothy ring and their rubber inserts in the spool
handle. These have very high serial numbers (8000+) as well as (a few years later on) very low numbers, probably up to 2300 or so. These models eventually
ended up having an all metal drag knob and spool handle. The reality is that the serial number issue is not documented and no one knows for sure, but the
theory that the F's started out with the 80...numbers is correct. Later on the numbers counted from "zero".
When Ari got into difficulties Thorkild Damm acquired the F-rights in the mid-nineties (and S and Remco's) and, as I have had both F's for many years, I have to say that the Danish F's are identical to the latest Ari F's from the nineties. The only difference is indeed the serial number. The Danish ones have very high serial numbers and they appear to be in the 3000-4500 numbers. Please note that the numbers are unique only within their model range, as I have had a Remco and a F1 with the same number. For the record: Remco's from ATH Denmark are to be identified by their different clicker pawl, which Thorkild altered. F Colours were at first black and silver/reddish brown, but other brown variations exist. Later on there were all silver F's, with either black or red lettering and black ones with white or red lettering. There are some variations, for instance black/silver, but to my knowledge these were not factory colours. However there are some rare factory trials, like red and green combinations. The Danish colours are black, black/gold and silver/gold. The F's came with a blue velvety pouch with a hole for he spool knob and a small ATH leaflet, later on also with Benecchi or Benecchi like leather etuis. The Danish models came with a neoprene pouch and were packed in a white box. There is much more to tell, especially from 1995 on, but the fact is that until 1995 this is above all the story of a design genius that didn' care a bit about collectors, serail numbers or whatever. |

The Danish F-series started with serial number 4000 and the S-series started with 1000.
