Am curious to know if any of you have read his books and if they're any good.
Normally I just hit the library or B&N to check someone new out. Unfortunately Kustich is not on either source's shelf.
Thanks,
MD

Jerry Kustich books - good reading? |

I discovered this author & his books in a very round about way today - researching a rod taper online. Titles, illustrations & online reviews all look
appealing...

MD; I like his writing. A blend of personal stories & anecdotes revolving around flyfishing, working with the Glen Brackett team building rods and
reflections on life, the environment and conservation. He's someone who's writing tells you that chatting or fishing with him would be enjoyable.
I've been loaning out my copies of his books to friends and have gotten favorable feedback from them, as well.

I agree with Ken's description of Jerry's books. His writing style is very straightforward but personable and enjoyable. I particularly liked his
insights into the goings on at the Winston bamboo shop. Both books are good reads.

Contact Jerry and ask him to sign the books for you. They are very personal looks into his like and into his years with the Boo Boys. In a Wisp in the Wind
there is a great anecdotal story about a day at the Winston Bamboo shop. Having spent more than one or two days with the Boo Boys I can hear the conversation
as it happens. (I got a chance to read the chapter before it hit the book and was enthralled.) Jerry is just a great guy and a good fisherman.

I wrote this on a Maine flyfishing board a while back after reading "A Wisp in the Wind". Pretty much
covers it.
"I finished letting Jerry Kustich's new book "A Wisp in the Wind" percolate through my brain this weekend between sips of dark camp coffee and the aroma of woodsmoke from the stove. Needless to say Kustich covers it all. From his time working with the "Boo Boys" in Twin Bridges, to time spent chasing elusive fish such bulltrout, or descibing fond memories spent streamside he could have been writing about some of our own wintertime forum topics. Mixing threads on guitars, the beauty of the trout environ, the parallels between flyfishing and Robert Pirsig's "Zen and the art of Motorcycle Maintenance", and of course a little bit more about bamboo and you've got a start on where this book will take you. Probably the best book I've contemplated in a while on flyfishing. If Mr. Kustich ever considers coming to Maine fishing again I'd proudly share a pool with him. And oh yeah, Jerry weaves in our own Kathy Scott and David Van Burgel in several scenes and even had Kathy pen the writing on the inside of the cover. As Kathy writes- "'A Wisp in the Wind' is a journey well worth taking." An absolute truth. I hope to read more from them both in the future." |

I first met Jerry when he spoke to our local fly fishing club. He not only delivered a very interesting and engaging talk with accompanying slide show, but he
brought along several (then Winston) cane rods for our members to try.
I picked up an inscribed copy of "At the River's Edge" from him after we had a great conversation about the old San Francisco Winston shop and my Grangers. Later, after thoroughly enjoying his first book, I was able to obtain a copy of "A Wisp in the Wind" from Jerry's brother (and publisher) who kindly forwarded it to Jerry for an inscription before sending the book on to me. Both are great reads, BTW. Jerry is just a nice, down-to-earth guy who writes well and is most willing to pass on his talents and experiences to others who have like interests. In my view, we need more like him in this hobby. Regards, Flyman

Hunter has it right. I picked up a Wisp in the Wind, started reading it, didn't stop until I was finished. Then I sent Jerry an email about it; got a nice
reply.
The north side of my town faced east, and the east was facing south

Jerry's down-to-earth writing style and passion for flowing water, finny creatures, bamboo, and our environment have me wishing that he had more time to
write. Guess that his contributions as one of the "boo boys" will take precedence for awhile yet. Just a wonderful guy who hails from my hometown
where Erie meets Niagara. You will enjoy!

I agree with Hunter. In A Wisp in the Wind ,Jerry Kustich's writing style is analogous to the action of a bamboo rod; gentle, smooth, and unhurried. He weaves his philosophies of
life, the environment, and the craft of bamboo rod making thoughout his stories. His ideas on fishing and human interaction are well thought out and make his
book satisfying to read. There is not a lot of action here, but the insight into Mr. Kustich's life keeps the book interesting. I enjoyed the book enough
to buy his other book, At the River's Edge.
