New Jenkins Rod |
Lead | ||
|
I am thinking of getting a new 7 1/2 ft - 4 weight rod and considering a Jenkins. I have had 2 Jenkins before and loved them both (still have the one). Has
anyone gotten a rod from Steve - not a "Charlie" made rod. I know the rod looks great - but how did the rod perform after a year - 2 years? Overall
quality? Any comments about Steve's rods? Thanks much.

I got a Steve made GA 70 last year. Superlative rod, and fit and finish exactly what you would expect from Jenkins Rods.

Hi,
I got a GA70L last year made by Steve. A very well constructed rod with minimalistic aesthetics eventhough I jazzed it up by requesting for an agate stripping guide. The finish is not as 'glassy' nor as 'polished' as my Jennings and even the cherry insert is left as matt finish. But everything was built solid, seamless and tight. The real beauty of the rod is its casting qualities. It feels almost weightless and casts tight loops very naturally with little effort. Not a powerhouse but an incredible rod made for fishing and for delicate dry fly work. A good dealer friend told me how he casted rods from Charlie and Steve while blindfolded by his significant other ( lucky fellow!).. he felt no difference in the casting qualities. Good luck! I have 2 Steve Jenkins rods - 3 pc 70L and 3 pc 80 - and both are finished very nicely and simply; one is flamed, the other light cane. The finish on both is
not high gloss, but not really matte; somewhere in-between that with the cherry spacer and blued hardware looks just right. I have fished both modestly with
no issues.

Thanks much on the Jenkins input | #5 | ||

Guys - Thanks all for your info on Steve Jenkins. I have talked to Steve a couple of times and he sure is nice and sincere. Like a lot of you, I have had a
terrible experience with another son of a great maker here in Michigan - even sold one of his rods so I would not have to think about him when I saw the rod.
Sounds like Steve is is just "like the old man" - which in this case is a good thing. Jenkins rods seem like a good price compared to a lot of other
rods out there with comparable casting characteristics.

I have a GA756 built by Steve, and a Jenkin's "Ultimate" built some time ago by Charlie for one of his friends. Both are beautifully built rods. It was a pleasure doing business with Steve in buying both.

I've known Steve and Charlie Jenkins as friends, suppliers of fabulous fishing implements, and... most remarkably, perhaps the greatest supporters of my
art career during the past 30+ years. In addition to the 3 Jenkins rods I've been fishing over that period, Charlie restored a beautiful little Payne and
Steve did a museum quality refinish of a Hiram Hawes rod for me.
At the moment I am working on a watercolor of a Steve Jenkins rod with Greenback cutthroat trout still-life for Steve. Steve (in his spare time, when not crafting his lovely rods) has offered to build me a website...(www.michaelsimonanglingart.com) I love these men! And their rods are pretty nice as well! In the words of the great poet Bob Dylan..."Don't think twice, it's all right." |

The 8-foot 5-weight and the 7-foot 3-4 weight Jenkins are among the best rods I've ever cast. If I could have just one flyrod, it'd be a Jenkins.
