Opinions about Headwaters Vom Hofe-style reels |
Lead | ||
|
No intention of starting a controversial thread here, but I'm curious about the quality of the current Headwaters Vom Hofe-style reels. We all know these
are Chinese made. But some recent Chinese imports are beginning to match the quality of more sophisticated Asian countries. I've owned or handled dozens of
US and English-made reels. Are these Headwaters products junkers or are they beginning to approach world-class quality? I don't know. I'm not trying to
start a thread that automatically flames all Chinese stuff, and hope that we can get a dialogue going from folks here who have actually handled these, fished
with them, and had line burn out from the reel when a steelhead begins a run. In other words, let's talk quality, not politics. Who's handled these,
and what do you think about appearance & performance?

Do you have a link for these reels. I know there are several overseas makers producing VomHofe style reels but I'm not familiar with the one you reference. I've never owned any of these makes, but have heard mixed reports on this and other forums. Some owners feel that they are a good value and fairly well made while others have referred as being junk. Knowone that I've seen write about the various makers of these overseas reels has thought they rivaled the likes of Ballan, Adams, Peerless, Bacon, and certainly not comparible to the higher end quality of some of the lower production makers like Hermann, Bogdan, Godfrey, Saricione among others. The consensus that I've read is that for under $200 some of the reels are decent, but for a little more you might find a better made reel from some of the shops listed above. I'll be interested in hearing what anyone with hands on experience has to say, and for the record, this thread only has a chance of staying in the public viewing section if those posting honor pcg's request to stay on topic and not wonder off to bash overseas reel production. |

I have the small Headwaters classic reel, it is nearly an exact copy of a Bill Ballan Heirloom reel. Quality seems ok, not bad for a $200 reel. I can't
recall if I've ever used mine though I do have a line on it.

I looked at one at the local fly shop and thought it was pretty slick for two hundred bucks. If I wanted "the look" and wanted to keep costs down, I
would have bought one.

I have one of the Headwaters reels and will try to be as objective in my appraisal as possible. At first appearance they seem well worth the money. The problems I had with mine may well
have been taken care of by now as mine is over 18 months old. The drag was a little light measuring around one ounce
vs. the two to two and one-half I prefer with no real bias. I took it apart and added an extra horseshoe spring that
put it closer to the right amount. I played with it for around 15 minutes to see if it would remain consistent and it
literally wore the pawl down to a point there was practically no engagement. I contacted the gentleman selling them on
eBay and he was very helpful in communicating with the factory to express my problem and get it resolved. I sent it to
the factory in China and with reasonable turnaround received it back with several extra side plates in different colors.
The drag was still too light as received so I played with it a little more. I discovered that you could tighten
up the side plate screws more causing extra drag so after a little tweaking it was just right. I again messed with it
some before lining it up to make sure it would continue to hold up which it did. The next thing that happened is beyond
cause for concern and should be looked at closely before purchase. After putting on a nice Terenzio 4.5wt silk line, I
took it fishing. Not too far into the day the line got caught between the handle and frame and it stripped the silk so
badly all I could do was cut off 15' of one end ruining that end. So back to the cob shop in my basement where I
removed the handle and filed off some of the mounting post along with bending the serpentine handle enough to close the gap.
It has worked great since but was a process I wish I had not had to go through. I have communicated the
problems I incurred with the USA seller who has been a pleasure to deal with.

Marshall, thanks. Sounds like the reel was never field-tested. Made in a factory by workers who have no sense of the end product's purpose. I'm glad
you were ingenious.

I purchased one of the Headwaters about a month ago and have only used it once. It seems pretty darn nice for the price.
I couldn't afford one of the classics so this is my choice to get the classic good looks. I was disappointed that it came with no paper work, no info about cleaning or maintenance. Overall I would rate it an 8 out of 10. |
