Talked with Rita Nunley this afternoon and Bob came through the surgery just fine. She said being stuck in a hospital bed made him a little like a caged tiger. He's expected to be in hospital 3-5 days, and *supposed* to be on a walker for 6 weeks.

First, I want to thank everyone who sent well wishes, not only on here, but to my email and my cell phone, both of which were flooded for days before the surgery with calls and offers of help with things after the surgery. My bamboo world means a lot to me, and it felt great every time I got a note from any of you guys. Thank you, from the bottom of my hard.

Yeah, well, three days was all they could handle of the Caneman! LMAO. They shuffled my grouchy tail right on outta there. Now Rita just said something about pulling her hair out because I "push the limits". Hey, you're talking about Mr. Extreme Flyfishing! Limits are what I do!!!!
Yep, they said walker for 6 weeks, but I can tell you right now... that ain't happening. That thing, after a few days, is going to be like putting a side saddle on a hog... nobody gonna ride it, no need saddling it!!!

Truthfully, I'm getting around GREAT! I do use my walker, although I've already forgotten it a couple of times coming back from the bathroom or something and had to go back and get it. I figure I'll be on a cane in a week at the outside, then we'll see from there.

I guess in a way I was fortunate. The ordeal with the bad artificial knee tempered my pain tolerance. See, I've been basically walking around on a broken leg for at least the past six months. When the surgeon opened the leg, he told Rita, then later me, that the upper part of the artifical joint just fell out in his hand. That piece was supossed to be the bottom inch of my femur and it was loose. I mean it was literally NOT where it was supossed to be and was floating around in the joint. So now, here I am with a total knee, everything is in place and glued and screwed (they used URAC, so I'm not worried ) and the joint is no longer broken. I have stiffness, normal after surgery, and I have swelling, also normal after surgery, and I have some muscle weakness in my quads, also normal after surgery, but they said I'd have some extreme pain from the replacement and I've gotta tell you, this hurts LESS than walking around on a broken joint has for the past six months! I'm loving it! I'm not quite 4 days post up and I've already got 100% extension on the joint and about 75% of my target flexion (I am not at 90° and I expect at least 135°... my expectation, not the Doctor's). So I'm doing great.

There will be days I need a Hydrocodone or two, but so far, I've amazed myself, my wife, my physical therapist and my surgeon, so I plan to keep it up. You guys may not be stuck with me as long as you I thought you would be!!!
