I need a source for a dyed hen neck. Should be pale yellow, kind of like primrose pearsalls. I'd be gratefull if somebody could point me in the right direction. As always, thanks a million in advance.

Christian,
Tying those Oliver Edwards yellow spiders as in his video? Nice fly. Was wondering who might sell them also. Was considering buying white and dyeing my own actually. I just might save myself the trouble. |

Like these?
Best Bob PS - Christian - dyed some white or creme hen hackles via your suggestion of using tumeric in hot water.... with Pearsall primrose silk and the Oliver Edwards' Masterclass dubbing #07 "Heptagenid Sulphurea Dun & Emerger - Yellow May Sulphers." |

If you want a couple sample flies and half dozen or so of the dyed yellow hackles (I think I only did a dozen or so soft hackles), please let me know and I'll send them to you. Heck, I may as well dye some more of the soft hackles and tie more of this pattern ... which I'll probably end up using sometime this summer anyway, right? Best Bob PS - Want a piece of the "Killer Bug substitute yarn with the flies and hackles? |

Yellow is one of the easiest colors to dye as the dye seems to take especially well. Almost any fabric dye will work fine, just check the material often until
it is a light or as intense as you want it.

Conranch is Working the Problem | #8 | ||

I've got Denny at Conranch working on seeing if there is anything "natural" that's close to the color you're playing with. Who knows???
The guy is liable to come up with something!!!

I believe the hackles that I dyed with the "natural" tumeric spice (I'm being a wise guy, as usual) may have been from some JV hens that I got from Dennis ...... if not, they were some small Whiting hen skins that I found in the Madison area (while chasing the elusive Spotted Dace). Best Bob |

Bob, What do you use as a substitute for the killer bug? I have some old Orvis wool but I don't think it has nylon in it. I also did a search for Oliver
Edwards dubbing and all I found was stuff in the UK.

I use a Killer Bug sub made / sold in the UK.....I'll send a piece of it to you and a sample Killer Bug that I tied. Regarding the Oliver Edwards' dubbing, it's in one of the Oliver Edwards / Davy Wotton "cube" dispensers ---- #7, to be exact-- see this link ( http://www.hareline.com/images/harelinejpegweb/DUB7.jpg). I found several of these cubes at a couple Gander Mountain stores. Bought all I could find, since I was told that they have been discontinued. If they haven't, I now have a lifetime supply of Masterclass cubes. Best Bob |

Bob, I found two sources of the Master Class Cubes. I'll call tomorrow to see if they have them. The cubes have been discontinued but the material is still
available. I tied some of the Killer Bug but I don't have the correct wool. Thank you for the offer Bob

So it's the Masterclass cubes with the dubbing that are discontinued or the plastic cubes themselves. Empty cubes are available many places. If it's
the cube of dubbing, that's too bad as they are mighty convenient. Who sells "refill" bags of the masterclass colors? I have NOT been able to
find that anywhere.

Grant,
You can find both at Chris Helm's shop. Scroll down to page 20 on this link to find them. He has quite a variety of stuff as far as fly tying goes. He used to only have his catalog, but finally went on-line a couple of years ago. Like most fly tying places, he's great to deal with. I ordered some special deer hair among other stuff from him years ago, and when I called he was in the shower. I guess that his wife took the call and said that he'd call me right back. Sure enough, not ten minutes later, he did. http://www.whitetailflytieing.com/PDF/2007v1.3.pdf Regards, Mark

Just looked at the above mentioned catalog..... please go to the very top item on page 21 ... the "Masterclass River & Stream Dubbing"... the #7 called "sulfurs dun & emergers (yellow may)". That's the dubbing I used from the cube. If you order anything from that catalog, please order a couple extra packs of this #7 dubbing for me and I'll mail you a check, ok? Although I've seen the cubes in a couple local "big-box stores", I've seen only a few of the individual packs of the Oliver Edwards' dubbings. Every individual package that I saw, I bought. THANKS. by others. Anyway he has them.
