Would be interested in modification to the above- evidently it is not available on internet. What models was it applicable to? How do you do it? Thanks, Bill

Bill;
One Old School modification for saltwater use was to sew a leather tab to the rear frame pillar bar to allow application of additional drag pressure with the tip of the index or long finger of the right hand. The tab would be pressed against the flyline/backing on the spool. A variation on that, but which involves metal cutting, was to grind an opening at about 2 o'clock or 4 o'clock on the ventilated reel faceplate to allow a fingertip to press on the outside of the spool backplate. IMO the leather tab approach worked better and didn't damage the reel. Hope this is what you were looking for. Ken |

Exactly what Ken wrote is on page 21 of Leftys Advanced Fly Fishing Techniques book with an attached picture of the cutout on the reel. A good full page is
devoted to talking about the modifications to the Medalist.
I guess if you didnt want to splurge for a Fin Nor or Pate reel back in the day you just got out a metal saw and improvised. You aint gonna see me cut any of my Medalists up... Brian

Really want to give thanks for the answers- ran across the modification and wondered what it was- do not think I need it for trout in E. Tn and Western NC.
Thanks again- Bill gaude

Bill;
The old Pflueger reels are probably the most modified reels ever. Sort of an American "hot rod" of fly reels. I've seen many old photos of Pfluegers with various mods on them that aren't even mentioned. Pay close attention to old fishing photos and you'll see a host of interesting variations on the reels. Hi Guys, There's a book, ah which one, that shows the cutaway and other modifications. [ Damn, which boo?] Anyway, a 1/4"x20 stainless steel nut
epoxied on the spool opposite the handle is apparently a good counter balancer. What IS that book? Jay Edwards

Lefty's Saltwater Flyfishing book also has Pflueger mods as well as a special spool that was made by a machinist in Fla.

A few years ago on Ebay I saw one of the machined spools, with the Pflueger reel, that Windknot is referring to. I sort of regret not picking it up.

Herman Voss is the name of the machinist/fisherman whose work Lefty shows in Flyfishing in Salt Water(page 30). I saw the same spool or reel on Ebay a couple years ago and I think I did bid-but just not high enough. Another bauble to watch out for! Are there any other professional/commercial mods for the Medalist other than P-foot and Voss? |
