Bobs standard rod has black aluminum rings like the old Youngs.

gclark, this means I'm one step closer to mine
Seriously, so this just showed up or did Bob drop you a line that you were next up and review with you the details of your rod first?. I'm a few years in and switched from my original order of a 275 to a 260 and never did hear back from Bob about that change. Figure that either means he's busy or I should plan on raiding the kids college fund and sit out over on E-bay if I want a summers rod. I hate bothering the guy and certainly understand his decision to cut back but if I am lucky enough to have my name come up I don't want to screw up my one and only shot. I'd be interested in the process that led to that beauty arriving at your front door thanks bill |

Why is it that we don't want to disturb(?) Bob about our order?
Isn't it logical you're excited about the rod and want to talk about it with the maker, inform about the progress, etc.? Or is Bob such a terrifying guy? Jay |

Jay,
Everything I've heard about Bob is that he's a great guy...... its nothing like that. From all accounts it seems he's winding down and I'm sure gets flooded with calls and emails all day and I'm guessin a significant percentage of those calls are shall we say.........not well thought out. I know a few rodmakers and have heard enough stories about annoying 'excited' customers that I'd prefer to make my order, stand in line and wait my turn. This is one time where a squeaky wheel may not be the best strategy but thats just me. I know there are folks who feel " well I'm spending 2-3 K, I should get my calls answered promptly!" but I never like fishing with those guys anyway so I'll take a different road. Mistake?.....maybe......but its just a damn fishing rod and I'll feel better about it if it comes to pass. I was just interested if gclark got a call first...... |

Plus the time spent on phone calls, emails, etc is time away from the bench.

Heddon 8'0" 1 1/2F | #867 | ||
|
Fellow caniacs:
Thanks to a fellow Forum member, here's my latest acquisition: A post-War Heddon 8'0", 1 1/2F Model 10, "Blue Waters", Extra Light Trout taper. EX++ all-original condition. Wrapped in gold & black jasper, bright n/s ferrules. A very fine tipped rod, I tried it today with the Meek 54 spooled with a WF-4-F. Casts beautifully and accurately. But don't tell BlackHillsBill!
Regards, Flyman |

Looks very nice with the Meek. From what I can see you are lucky to have found a 1 1/2f 8' Heddon. That is a great rod and hard taper to come by. Good
score!

Happy to have received in the mail today my just purchased (eBay) 8.5 foot Madison. Says for a 9wt, but thankfully throws an 8 a mile, don't have a 7 to
try on it. It is absolutely mint. Not bad for 265 bucks. Look out Atlantic Salmon, here comes Gary with his new bamboo!

Is that an 5 1/8 ounce? If so, you might want to pick up a WF9 for it.

PHY Para 15 | #878 | ||
|
Finally, at long last... the end of a quest. My thanks go out to all that guided me through the terror and error, and most of all my friend Robert Golder (Quashnet), without whose guidance I would have failed. The rod below is a genuine PHY Para15 as certified by Bob Summers. Bob had sold it to a gentleman in CO many years back. The rod had been redone prior to the sale by someone who obviously knew rod crafting, but didn't appreciate collectibility... in that all the writing was removed. It's thought that the fact that Paul used some crappy gold ink for a while may have contributed to the removal. The rod was later consigned through Mike Clark who also vouched for its authenticity and sold it to the gentleman that I purchased it from... don't you know that was a fun trail to follow!!! Thanks for all that verified and vouched for the information. I had lusted for a Para 15 for years, but was not about to put out the dollars required. So I started looking at clones... and that's where the troubel
started. Each clone I tried felt/cast differently from the last, I about wore out my arm trying rods over a two year period. PHY affectionados assured me
that a "true" PHY would cast differently, given the fact that Paul did not build on 5 inch centers and used pre-embargo cane and treated it
differently... etc., etc., etc.

Tested "The Range" | #880 | ||
|
I've had the opportunity to test "the range" so to speak.... the "dry" tip has been used on smaller waters and with light flies, and
the far more parabolic "wet" tip has been tested with nymphs, weighted San Juan Worms, etc... and the rod has been pronounced good. It is amazing to
me how different the two tips feel and cast.
The really fun part was in taking the rod to Sow Bug and having "Preacher" Harry cast it. As you know, Harry is a "faster" rod man, and I would have not expected him to enjoy the rod... and if he did it would have been with a lighter line on the "dry" tip. Harry left me at his booth to go out and cast the rod and never seemed to get back! He finally turned back up and surprizingly enoungh really enjoyed the rod, with the "dry" tip as expected ... but with a DT6 which would have accentuated its parabolic tenedencies. His comment was something to the effect that he "almost" got into the backing.... humma, humma...... which I guess is a good thing.
I can manage 50-60 ft with ease on the "dry" tip, and the "wet" tip allows me to add a good 20 ft to that distance. If I wanted to I clould prossibly get out to 80-90 ft with the "wet" tip... but the question is why? Ralph |
