3 questions:
1) I don't have a multiple rod case and was wondering if I can take a rod as carry on in a covered PVC tube.
2) Are there any members that live in the Venice / Sarasota area?
3) Any recommendations for fishing in the area?

The trout takes the fly, the line tightens and it's like I was blind, but now I
see.

Contact the air lines about their carry on policy.
PVC is a better bet than metal tubes - Shorter the better although I did carry on an 8' 2/2 last April. Get a copy of the TSA regs regarding fishing equipment and have ti with you available on line. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/editorial_1188.shtm Pete |

I flew Continental Airlines from PDX to Houston to West Palm with a 42 inch PVC tube without any problems at all. Think the only problems you may have is with
an aluminum tube. If it dont fit in the overhead compartment ask the flight attendant to store it for you ..... but never, never leave it with your checked in
luggage. Paul

Pete,
AA doesn't allow rods as carry ons per the reservations supervisor. I will have to go to the airport and have a Ticket Counter Supervisor inspect my rod rube with the rods and make a ruling, then put that information in my ticket information.

I pack my rods in a triangular mailing tube, that way if you can't carry it on, it's protected and taped up. you may have to check it though, so pack
it well. worse case scenario is you mail it from the airport. i've been able to carry on this way in the past.

No problems when I flew AA in May, rods are my "carry-on" and reels, in a back-pack, are my "personal item"...

Remember it is all subject to the TSA agent, they all have different ideas as to how the law should be applied, In the Pac NW I have never had a problem taking
a fly rod on board. In some parts of the country they are not familar with fly rods, Pvc tubes and they classifiy them as some sort of weapon. So you are at
the mercy of the individual TSA Agent ....Nothing is written in stone even though there are written regulations for them to follow .. Paul

My flight to FL with a 48" PVC tube was on SouthWest, I had it in a long nylon rod bag that had two pair of shoes as well in it. It fit either along side
me against the fusaloge or under the seat s in front of us. The only question I was asked about it was getting of the plane in FL the flight attendant asked
"what type of instrument is that?" then got allembarassed when I told her it was a fishing pole.

Steve--sorry to read about your father-in-law's illness. Hope he will get well. I see people get on planes all the time with their fly rods in regular
tubes (usually the cordura covered tubes). Really irritates me the number of people who are allowed on with some of the items they have, but a slender tube
can be a problem. I have to wonder why a rod tube is any different than any mailing tube I also sometimes see. But hey--we're talking about an
organization that once banned lighters, but allowed matches--after an idiot tried to light a bomb with matches! Go figure. Hope you have a good trip.

Monty,
When I said "fly rod" to the pretty blond haired smiling flight attendant, she lost all expression and gained a perplexed look of severe confusion , so I restated my answer with "fishing pole" and the
light bulb grew bright again, the smile returned and she said "watch out for the crocodile's!!"

BTW, the fishing has been pretty good in the past few weeks down here in Southern Florida, alot of rain means cooler waters, Panfish are starting to spawn now,
Bass fishing has been good. Panfish are alot of fun downhere on a 6-3 midge Cane rod. There are canals all over the place in South Florida, Pick one and go
fishing. Go on the net you will also find some nice lakes that are available for fly fishing. I found a Catch and Release Large Mouth Bass lake here in WPB
recently Alot of good opportunities, and good luck ..Paul
