P & M Ferrule | #1 | ||

Hi Vince - I don't have a #13 around, but do have some heavier ones. The females are basically a straight tube with a welt at the lip. If no one can give
you the dimensions, I can help you figure them out, if you have a correct male to start with.

Hello Tom,
Have read many of your interesting contributions over on the 'rodmakerslist'. ~ Am assuming this is a 13/64 ferrule ~ bamboo 'mikes' a bit under .200" where it meets the 'tabs' end of the present ferrule. Have just recently talked with the rod's owner, and he tells me that he's been aware that some 'work' has been done on his rod, and that he would approve of my making a new ferrule. I have a sense that the tip section may be shorter than originally, but evidence of a pin 'remains' in the bamboo, raises a question about that. I would certainly appreciate any assistance you may be willing to provide regarding the configuration of an 'original'. I can only say with certainty that the basic dimension of the male ferrule is .203" outside diam., and approx. 13/16" in length. The depth from the welt on the current ferrule to the terminal end of the butt is about 1 1/16", which suggests an unacceptable 'gap' at that point. I can machine a replica of an original, but would need to know the (approximate) size/shape of the welt, the thickness of a water seal, and whether a serrated end is typical. It needs to be noted that 'Horsesho' has opined that this rod should have equal length sections, based on one he previously owned. The tip section on this one is about 1 5/8" shorter than the butt, which may (or may not) be typical. Any further information/advice you may provide will be greatly appreciated. Vince B. |

Hi Vince - I have been contacted by one of our European friends, Dr Wolfram Schott with some information, and we are trying to reconcile your numbers. P &
M would have used metric diameter tubing on the ferrules, and designed the lengths in metrics as well. A 5mm ferrule would have a male slide diameter of .197,
not .203, and we are thinking that perhaps a 5.5 mm male may have ground down to fit the #13 female. It would help a lot to know the shoulder diameter of the
male, which ought to be 6 mm (.236) if the ferrule is a 5mm size, or 6.5 mm (.256) if it is a 5.5 mm male. I'll post some pictures that Dr Schott was kind
enough to send. They are typical of P & M, and if your male does not match the photos, it was replaced as well.

Hello Tom ~ (3rd try)
This is to express my thanks to both you and Dr. Schott for the special effort you've made in an attempt to assist me with the ferrule dilemma. The 'metric connection' did cross my mind and give cause to wonder why the English dimensions (as measured) didn't deviate more from our standards (64ths). The obvious answer is , as you suggested, that a pair of replacements (W&McG, perhaps?) were used. The images Dr. Shott provided, and you posted, are further evidence of that. Neither of the replacement ferrules resemble those shown. The owner, resigned to the irretrievable loss of integrity of the rod, has indicated an acceptance of whatever 'repair' will render the rod "castible". With his acquiessence, I've modified the female ferrule to allow the male member to reach the terminal end of the butt section, and reset it, with now only to match the wrap color. Incidentally, I've been advised that most of these rods have green wraps ~ this one ruby red!?? Again, my sincere 'thank you' Vince B. |

Glad to be of assistance. Thanks also to Dr Schott for his help. Red wraps are entirely possible on a P & M. If the script on the shaft is intact, and the
tricolor trim band is there, the wraps could be original. Look closely at the ferrule wraps, which would have to be replacements and therefore slightly
different.
