Southern Maine, weekend May 10-11 |

I have an invitation to lead a folk arts event in Southern Maine on May 10th. Are there good opportunities for fishing bamboo at that time, or is it likely to
still be too cold? Thanks.

Yes. Since the southern limit of permafrost in Maine doesn't quite reach the outskirts of Bangor, this typically allows at least a few months of trout
fishing each year, once the sun peeks above the southern horizon starting, oh, about half past June. Of course, in Maine a few fishermen are lost each year to
polar bears and snow snakes, but people! this is wilderness, after all!!
Say, is there anyone here (unlike Ralph) who lives within a thousand miles of Maine and can actually answer a fella's question?

I was in Maine over Easter. Its still cold and north of Bangor the snow is still piled high when usually signs of spring are in the air. Most of the rivers
between Bangor and Freeport are still ice-covered. I was planning a trip into the northern woods for early June when I had a great time a couple of years back
- but I am thinking its going to be mid to late June before I venture forth. When you get closer to the time why dont you call the folks at L.L.Bean as see
what they suggest - their fishing guys are well tuned in and they have conditions posted in the shop.

Snow and ice accumulations are receding daily and water levels should be good by the time you arrive. Early May is Hendrickson/Red Quill time on some waters. Inquire here. Check back with me at Lang's and let me know how your plans are going. Jeff |

Thank you everyone for your input; if I get into Maine on that weekend, I'll know how to proceed with regard to fishing. Sadly, Jeff, I can only get to
Lang's in the fall, as in recent years the show weekend in the spring conflicts with the New England Folk Festival. As president of the festival
association, I can't really slip away...
Quashnet's Paul H. Young Rod Database has photos and descriptions of 290 PHY Co. rods, plus catalogs, accessories,
etc. Thank you to all who continue to send me PHY rod photos and info.

I believe that there will be a limited Atlantic Salmon season on the Penobscot for the month of May. The proposed season was for 50 fish total catch, C&R
only. I have seen a newspaper report that the season has been approved but I have not seen anything official.

I live in Maine and in May, I'd go to small brooks on the coast for native brookies, the Tailwater at Shawmut on the Kennebec IF the water is down...Grand
Lake Stream (which is NOT in southern Maine)...
"Southern" is subjective. If you are speaking of the Portland area, I'd go to the Presumscott in Windham, the Crooked River...or Mousam. If Southern is coastal nearer Rockland- I'd hit the St George off Ghent road, or at the roll dam on Senebec lake. The Sheepscott will be stocked by that time at Palermo. Stripers will almost-and maybe already- be showing in the Kittery area. Hutch |

Depending on the weather and runoff, fishing should be fine that time of year. My recommendation is to go a bit further north, PM me and I'll pass on some
streams that should be fishing well about then.

I've heard good things about the Pleasant River which is not very far from Portland, though never fished it personally. I live quite a bit further north
with the snow snakes and polar bears
