Call him instead. That's likely to get you the answer you're after.

My memory is that he's off on a fishing trip currently. He's not responded in the last week to several emails I've sent, nor to phone calls.

I spoke to him about a month ago on some rods, including one of mine, that he is finishing up this coming month, and I believe he told me it was about 2 plus
years. I believe he credited his longer order list to the George Black book and the interest in his rods that George's book has generated. He requires a
deposit that is roughly 40% of the rod cost, if I recall. Ric

40% down no thanks. Will never give a builder more than 200.00 ever again. Understand Bill builds a great rod but what if he is in a major accident or even
dies. To me it is not worth the gamble. Alot can happen. The only time I ever broke my 200.00 down rule was recently and unforunatlely the builder passed away
two weeks after he cashed my 750.00 deposit check. That was the only time I ever sent more than my customary 200.00 if requested.

Bob, I understand your point of view (trust me, I really do), but I'd like to point out that it's pretty easy for a rodmaker to get taken on a rod.
Think about it this way, most contractors, lets say roofers, want something up front, typically between one third and one half, then may request the rest when
the job is done or another installment at some point. If it's fair for a roofer to do that, why should it be a problem with a rod maker?
The only way to guarantee one actually winds up with a rod, is never wait to have one made, buy from a dealer, from a friend, from the board.

I agree with Bob. I know Bill Abrams is a very fine maker and if that is his policy, so be it. I personally would not forward a 40%
deposit for anything! He should have no problem at all moving the rod if the buyer somehow reneges or is otherwise unable to complete the transaction and he would also retain the original deposit. Bob

And I agree with the two Bobs. Any builder who has a two year waiting list should be able to instantly sell any rod if a buyer falls through. If a rod is
custom built, that's a different issue. But if the rod ordered is one of the standard models, there should be no issue. In other words, he has a waiting
list, & anyone on it should be thrilled to get their rod sooner than expected.
I ordered a rod two years ago from a builder who, I suppose should remain unnamed, & put down the required 40% deposit on the basis I would wait no longer than 12 months (standard rod, BTW). I got that 12 months to-build max in writing. I'm now still waiting after 26 months & with no notice whatsoever from the builder about when to expect the rod. AND it's rare that I get the courtesy of even a return call. When builders abuse customers trust, and fail regularly to meet deadlines, they sully the overall business. Too bad. My sympathy is rapidly running out. After all, this is supposed to be fun, right? |

I sympathize with you Pat! That sort of slack abuse of an agreed upon transaction is inexcusable.
I also agree that no names should be directly addressed publicly here on the Forum, but with your many friends and contacts within the bamboo community a private conversation should certainly be in order with others. You certainly are more understanding than I.... as I would have gone totally ballastic long before now! We're not talking about a $5.00 cane stick you can pick up down at the local hardware! And yes I agree, this should be fun! Bob |

First of all I dealt with Bill Abrams late last year and he was right on time with the item. He does build a handsome stick too, and well worth the money.
Two years wait time, no thanks, I will keep my eye open on the used market. Heck I could be dead by then too. Besides if the wait is soo long the maker should have no trouble moving the rod. I learned the hard way about money up front, not once, not twice, but three times and that is just rods. |

Everyone chooses to run their business in the way that suits them best. Sometime ago, I ordered a rod from a prominent maker. It was going to be the most
money that I had ever spent on a rod, and I had done my homework. When I ordered the rod, the maker suprised me by saying that he didn't need any deposit.
He called a me a few weeks before his approximated delivery date to tell me my rod was finished. I was shocked when the rod arrived the very next day, as I had
yet to pay anything. I immediately sent the total payment, and will never forget this makers trust. When I asked him about it, he said that he could actually
sell the rod for more if I returned it, as he now had a 2+ year waitlist, and his rod prices had increased.

I know the coin is a Bit smaller, but it's 50% down and a 60+-month waiting list for a Randall knife.

I spoke to Streamer by phone an hour ago. He's well & working steadily. And unlike many of us, myself included, he notes that he checks email weekly,
rather than hourly. Patience, all!

Per Brandon has a good plan and when the rod is started he requires a deposit, when its done you pay the rest
40% is more then needed in my opinon, i have a house being built right now, when a part is done i pay, i pay only after a part is done, like electrical, when its done i pay, not before but after dave |
