This question is way too hard.
In my hand the Martha Marie feels like a natural extension of my arm, and so my easy answer is the Martha Marie. But I can't bring the cursor anywhere near the "Vote" button without considering how the Driggs is precisely what Paul Young called it: "a short light rod for narrow brushy streams and creeks." How can I not vote for a roll casting wonder that exactly matches its maker's description? And then there's the Midge. It's not the universal taper that Arnold Gingrich said it was, but it's still pretty darn versatile. Of course the Para 15 is truly versatile if you get the wet and dry tips, and that means I've saved the Perfectionist for last, the rod that no less an angler than Al McClane would probably have put first on his list. Way too hard.
Quashnet's Paul H. Young Rod Database has photos and descriptions of 290 PHY Co. rods, plus catalogs, accessories,
etc. Thank you to all who continue to send me PHY rod photos and info.

I don't know, please mail examples this way, and I'll get back to you...
rats... didn't work. I know which one I would pick for my home water and native fish, and voted that way.

Bob I agree with your statement. I probably should have worded it "If you could only own one". I thought about editing the question after posting the
survey, but decided not to. I also know that many of the votes will go to what rod a person owns or what type of water a person likes to fish.
BTW, I did not vote either, I was faced with the same dilemma, However I am leaning more in one direction than the others. Dave |

I'd vote for "none of the above." My favorite PHY is an 8' with a 14 ferrule--lighter in hand than a Para 15, even a K.T.K., and the most
versatile of the PHYs I've used. While I like the Perfectionist too, a lot of rods do what the Perfectionist can do. However, when it comes to true
idiosyncratic qualities, I think the Martha Marie is in a class by itself--it's a special rod for a special purpose, and no other builder made a taper, as
far as I know, that comes close to it.

PHY and choice | #9 | ||
|
For most of my everyday fishing my vote goes to the Martha Marie... I have one with tips for #5 and #6 respectively. For me the #5 is clearly the tip of
choice. I have cast MM's that where a true #6, and some that a #7 would not have overloaded them.
The Midge for mid season low water midges, I do not want to work that hard. The Para 15 for Opening day runoff with big nymphs and streamers, and for the warm evenings when the big fish come out to play. |

I have only ever cast one of his tapers, my Thramer Martha Marie, but I think that might get my vote no matter how many of the others I fished. To me the
Martha Marie is such a versatile rod, able to perform well in a variety of conditions. I use it to fish everything from medium sized streamers to delicate
dries, and have caught fish from 4 inches to 4lbs with it. If I'm setting out for a day and dont know what to expect, I always grab this rod and it never
dissapoints.

I voted for the Perfectionist taper..........I'm having one built by Stonefly Custom Fly Rods here in New Mexico. Ready to pick up by the end of this
week, (that's what he said last week).
-7' 6" 2/2 4 wt. blank, Paul Young Perfectionist taper by Mark Fitch -CSE nickel silver medium Mayfly reel seat with walnut insert -Nickel silver ferrules, with nice fine checkering -6' cigar grip, flor grade -Hex winding check -Standard "U" hook keeper -Red Agate nickel silver stripper guide, very nice color streak -Chrome snake guides and tip top -Scarlet silk wrappings with pale yellow trim -"Stonefly" case We went over his generous supply of blanks and components at his shop, put all together in a pile, then talked about how I wanted the wrappings. Then the wait was on........... My first rod from "Stonefly" was a 7', 2/2, 4wt., F.E. Thomas. (Just in case you ever ask what my favorate F.E. Thomas taper is.......) KERMIT

I voted for the Driggs, just love what it can do in all situations on the small streams I fish, but, would never leave home without my Martha Marie in the
truck, also a great rod for all around fishing......

PHY convert | #13 | ||

Well, it only took 35 (or so) years for me to "discover" the PHY tapers. As a relative "PHY newbie", I very much admire the original Youngs
I've seen here on the Forum, and I certainly enjoyed casting a couple of Uni's rods last spring.
As a result I recently acquired a Driggs "clone" (on a Zietak blank) and I am really impressed with the way it casts with a WF-5-F. Specifically, the strong tip and resulting higher line speed appeals to me. And due to this experience...and this thread's poll results... I have a similar Zietak-based Perfectionist clone on the way to me as I write this. While I realize that most likely today's PHY clones may not exactly match either the dimensions or performance of the originals, just the same I can't wait to give my new "Perfectionist" a try on our local Black Hills streams. Thanks, Dave, for this thread and your expertise too. I hope you bring some of your PHY's to the CO Cane Conclave! Best, Scott

Scott, I bet that the Zietak PHY tapers are right on. You will love the Perfectionist also. Let me know what PHY rods of mine you want to cast (Driggs I
assume) and I will bring them.
Looking forward to seeing you at the conclave. SBoat...very insightful post! Dave

Perfectionist... | #15 | ||
|
Thanks Dave........ I'm sure Scott will love his Zietak "Perfectionist" when it gets to him, I also have a Zietak "Perfectionist" that
a friend had done up for me when I purchased a set of blanks a few years ago. I kind of forgot about that one, I guess I'm waiting until I'm a bit
older (45), and then I'll start using the Perfectionist more, it's a very nice-easy-smooth casting 4wt if there ever was one. I didn't mean to
leave it out of the mix, but just can't seem to stop using the Driggs.

PHY Perfectionist by Mark Fitch | #16 | ||
|
Congratulations on the new addition.
I am very familiar with Mark Fitch's rods. He does some wonderful work. I have both #4 & #5 weight versions of his "Perfectionist". Try casting different lines, it is worth the effort to experiment. I also have a Driggs and a Midge, I prefer the casting characteristics of his Midge over an original PHY/Midge that I have. Dewardian.

Smidgen. My favorite brookie rod.
Also like the Driggs. Those and the Midge are the only PHY rods I've made or cast. |

PHY Princess | #20 | ||
|
I have a PHY blank/Wanigas Supreme Rod. This is a 7' rod, I beleive as a PHY rod it would be a Princess.
This "Princess" has an attitude................ Probably best with a #6 line. This is not one of the more desireable PHY tapers. Think stiff. If you would like the numbers e-mail me and I will 'mic the rod. |
