The Clausing lathe 10 X 36 Help in disassembly for moving...... |
Lead | ||
|
Hello All, I just purchased the above lathe and need to do a partial tear down so as to render it smaller and a bit lighter to bring up out of a basement
workshop. It is a great older machine made in 1973 that has only had one owner. I know how to run it. but my machinery moving knowledge is little. Does any
here have experience moving a medium size 925lb beast like this. I have posted on this page before about some of the smaller reels that I have made. I have 3
in the works and I can't wait to get back to it. Any help would be appreciated Thanks & Best, Paul

I have moved my 800 pound Logan 3 times in the last twenty years. Rollers, levers, and a truck with a hydraulic lift were involved. Adding the problem of a
basement location I would add an inclined plane, a pulley or winch. 800 pounds of iron on rollers on a slope has potential danger. I think I would consider
professional help before moving a celler dwelling lathe.

Hey Paul,
If I'm not mistaken they make a motorized hand truck that can actually climb stairs. I believe they use them to move large safes, this may be a great option to avoid any damage to the lathe and or yourself! Damage to the lathe will be costly, damage to you might not only be costly, but it can be permanent! Just a suggestion and maybe an idea you hadn't thought of. Kindest regards, Terry

You might want to pose this question over on the Practical Machinist board. Or you could just do a search on the topic. Lots of folks over there real familiar
with moving heavy iron out of strange places.

Hi Paul,
Just a word of caution about some lifting devices. The so-called "come-alongs" are rated for a pulling weight NOT a lifting weight. So a "1000 lb. rated Come-along" is NOT meant to LIFT 1000 lb. in the air just to drag it along the ground. Get a chain hoist if you have to hold it up in the air. Also a pulley doesn't usually have a "Lock" on movement when you need to hold it still a bit. Chain hoist does. 6 months ago I moved my 700lb. Rockwell Vertical Mill down into my basement, mostly by myself. I got my teenage daughter to help with the column. The rest I did by myself. Just break, I mean dis-assemble, the machine into smaller pieces that are managable. Move 'em and reassemble in your location. That's all there is to it !
'course it'll prolly take ya a bit longer to RE-assemble than it did to Dis-assemble. {:>) Good luck with the move. Larry Swearingen New Hoosier |

Paul,
Why not give Clausing a call? They have an excellent technical support staff and I'm sure they will help you out. I talked with them this morning on another matter. Harry

Clausing Lathe moves in ! | #7 | ||

The new member of the family has arrived. The lathe has been moved, placed and is in the process of being readied for power. I still have to put in a breaker
and get power to the wall behind the lathe. There is some reassembly to do but the machine mover and Marshall from this board helped immensely. It took all 6
people invoved to get the bed and headstock still attached up the stairs around a few corners and out the door to the trailer. Because of a very tight
stairwell, we could not use a dolly or any lift until we were outside. I will post about this again when I am all up and running. Thanks to all for your
suggestions and moral support..and a 21 rod salute to Bruce Howell and Alan Kube who gave telephone technical support and encouragement along the way...the
adventure continues! Best,Paul
Ps I have some reel projects in the works. |

Power is up!! | #8 | ||

Well the good news is .....I (with some more encouragement from Bruce Howell) was able to reconnect the power to the motor and replace the power supply cord to
the lathe (220 single phase) and in stealth electrician mode...add the correct breaker to the panel and a plug to the wall right behind the machine. So now I
have no excuse to play!! the adventure continues....Best,Paul
