Nice ones guys.
Scott, I had that exact reel recently ...sold it to a member of this board. Maybe he'll give us a glimpse. |

Ok, ok--here it is, Dean's 100 Monty--well, it was his--beside a Godfrey 275 for comparision:
and here's the other side:
I love the Monty--beautfully built, tight tolerances, and as pretty as they come. The problem is the reel foot: it's 2 1/2 inches long, and 9/16 inches wide--too large to get onto the Summers midge I want to use it with. Arch said he could modify the foot for $100, or build me a new one for $250, and both are awkward propositions: I don't have the heart to alter the foot, and $250 is pushing it for me. Anyone have a busted Monty with a usable foot that could be modified? The foot supports are exactly 1" between the sideplates. bb |

Very nice 100! I'd love to trade my 40-yd. Monty towards either a 100-yd. Monty or an 80-yd. Pflueger Golden West, if anyone's interested in a swap. Regards, Flyman

Great reels....Some of the Monty's are true classics.
The reel on the left is an 80 yard nickel silver Montague with the name "Trout" inscribed on the face plate. The second reel is a 100 yard nickel plated Montague that is unmarked. I fish the 80 yard reel on an HI Tonka Queen. Thanks Steve |

I don't know if this one's a Monty or not. It's marked "Wm Read & Sons Boston" quite faintly and "100-BB" on top of the
foot. It's a scant 2 5/8 diameter and holds a modern DT4 and 12 feet of backing.I do know it fits nicely on this 7 1/2' Fairy, marked "Wm Read
& Sons, Boston, FE Thomas Maker". Check out the nifty beehive counterbalance.

Thanks Ron, both have a few battle scars but I hope I can perform as well at 90+ years old. Anyone have a feel for the reel's maker?

If there's a hole in the foot, it's JVH, but I believe it's a Monty.

Here are a few shots of a hard rubber that I have. It is marked Sterling on top of one side of the reel foot with a fancy F or L in gold with Trade Mark above
and below on the other top. I can not get a good picture of the raised print. There is a 100stamped into the bottom of the reel foot. should I take this to be
of Pflueger origin do to the foot and not a Monty?

Looks just like a Four Brothers "Delite" to me. So, I'd say Pflueger.

I'm with Dean here, it doesn't really look like a JVH, Monty, or Pflueger. The "100-BB" is stamped on the top of the foot, (reel side),
almost at the pillars on the left end if looked at from the crank side. No hole in foot, of course. Foot is straight and screwed into the the two bottom
pillars with screws that have been staked and filed round to conform to the pillar profile. There's a knurled bearing oil cap on the backplate and the
click switch is kind of hat-shaped. (Flares out at base) It's NPB. I like this little reel a lot.

Delite you have a great size in that 100-yd reel, though - they're hard to come by. Your reel is a merchant reel. Sterling was a trademark of JA Whittemore, a catalog merchant. The reel was made by Enterprise (Pflueger, 4 Bros) here is a Sterling 100-yard multiplier that I sold earlier this year

Short Tip wrote: This is where things get tricky. If not Montague, Pflueger or JVH ...then who? I have a buddy that likes to say "Blame it on Malleson". The list of American makers we can pin this stuff to, definitively, is very short. It could be that Wm. Read contracted with Montague for a non-Montague looking reel ...something they could claim as their own. But, who knows ??? The longer I do this (been at it since 1976) the less I think I know.

Thank you for your insight Bulldog I really appreciate your background on the reel. It is a great looking model in my opinion and now that you have told me the makers name it really adds to it. I picked it up a couple years ago and am happy I did. How do you think reels like this are valued, it would help to know so as to figure out what respect it demands in my collection? Lastly the pictures you take of your reels are always nice and your Delite pictures are no less. I would suspect that you keep them all cataloged. To everyone else, sorry for bringing a 4 Brothers into your Monty chat...I will see if I can get my hands on one at some point so as to join in

if it makes you feel better, there were many Montys marked for JA Whittemore, as well.
http://orcaonline.org/v-web/bulletin/bb/search.php if you search Sterling or Whittemore on ORCA, you should find some discussion. Teal, aka Dr. Todd, aka Whitefish Press, probably has extensive research on JA Whittemore for his "Reels of the Trade" column in the ORCA newsletter The Reel News
