Posts: 4 04/11/2008 14:26	Tags : None I have recently come by a 9', 4-piece, 2-tip Payne fly rod that I can't identify or value. It has a nickle silver reel seat w/sliding band and the engraving on the seat says "E. F. Payne Maker, Highland Mills, NY". All (4) sections are straight and 36" in length, finish is in great shape as are the wraps, which are light brown with black tipping. Each of the (4) rod sections all have light brown intermediate wraps. The rod doesn't appear to have been fished much, if at all, based on the condition of the finish and the absence of scratches on the reel seat. It has what appears to be the original light green bag with (2) tie strings and a likely non-original (but old) rod tube. I'm scared to death to fish with it and my wife is threatening to use it as tomato stakes unless I can prove that it has some value. Anyone have any ideas what the model is and a ball-park value (hopefull better than garden stakes). Thanks for your help.. What kind of Payne is this ? Posts: 5466 04/12/2008 13:21 the Canefather	Off the top of my head I'd say you have either an original Ed Payne built rod or one of the early Jim Payne built rods which would have value either way but as already has been said photos will help a lot. Posts: 5477 04/16/2008 15:02 the Canefather	Most definitely an Ed Payne rod, notice the ends of the ferrules where they exhibit an hourglass shape, the full ns reel seat and intermediates and the EF Payne stamp up near the grip, the canvas bag which houses all the sections, all in all a lovely old rod definitely worth more than being relegated to garden stakes. I am guessing it has a rather slow wet fly action which would diminish the number who would fish with it but still a collectible none the less, my gut estimates in the $1000-1300 range give or take.
