Beginners Class | #41 | ||
|
The most honorable Tim Wilhelm came up with idea for the beginners class. There are some beginners that are talking about coming down from the Charlotte area
and we thought that there might be some interest in this kind of class. What do you guys think, is it worth packing up the tools and bringing them down?

Ralph help me out. Just where are you proposing this take place? I know you have said LRO has donated a room for class time but where do you think we can just
go hang out and look and cast etc. There has been mention of an area behind Docks? I do not intend to fish as I have all year to do that so where will we be
able to go and just BS. As you said it would not be fair to take up all of LRO space so where will we go? Bamboo 10 I think that would be a great idea as we
all can learn something,but is there a place to do it all? dave

There is a covered area at the back of Docks, and direct access to either a wonderful lawn area there, or the Little River. I would assume that the BS'ers
can spend all the time they want in the class room at LRO as well. We have the class room all day long (as long as the store is open!!).
I'd like you to think about being on a panel to discuss "things to look for" when buying rods. There will be a lot of folks there that are neophites and well as experienced... so a wide range of questions are possible re. what to look for.......... Sort of like the Para15 I just bought... a whole different set of questions than, for instance someone looking at purchasing his first rod. But basically, many of the same questions. Thanks buddy... bring as many of your own rods as is possible... I think they'd be educational. Ralph |

Hey Ralph ---
We're getting pretty close! Is there a formal registration for the event or just a show up sort of thing? Just curious as I haven't seen any info about registration. I can't help it....I'm an incurable planner. Michael

We are very casual on this. This year a biggie might be name tags...... ;>) My bride has been down with ovarian cancer, and we haven't gotten her back
on her feet as yet. So I'm running a bit behind. If Basye doesn't get up, I'm going to have to back out, but with this being as casual as it is you
guys can handle it with me doing a bit of phone coordination, etc.

Things are proceeding apace with Jon (Creation Bear) and others helping to organize things for the gathering. Sounds like he's doing a better job than I
was!!!
Basye seems to be better, they have the colitis under control that plagued her after the ovarian cancer (plus other internals) operation. Hopefully we can get the colon to start and get moving and then she can really get on with her recovery. She's still in ICU, but with any luck we'll have her out of there soon. Thanks for all the notes, cards, flowers, food, help, etc during this ongoing crisis. It's truly amazing how many of you out there really care enough to make some effort to alleviate her suffering in one way or another. She's going to be one amazing woman after all of this... as if she wasn't amazing enough before she started. The weather here in the South is amazing right now folks. So make sure that you plan on attending this event if you can. The fish are responding well to the increase in water, and the bugs are cooperating to the fullest. Continue to monitor http://littleriveroutfitters.com for info and suggestions. Jon and others will make presentations on the fishing hot spots and methods during the gathering. Also there is a Trout Fest ongoint that weekend as well... you will be pleased!!! Ralph |

Basye Situation | #49 | ||
|
All;
With Basye (my wife) in such sad shape with ovarian cancer I'm probably not going to be able to attend this year… or if I do, it will be a cameo appearance. I'm sorry that I won't be able to be there, but I trust that you folks can appreciate the difficulties of having a spouse close to death. Others are picking up the ball and running with it… the show will go on. If a miracle occurs, I will be there in person. Basye and I will be there in spirit.
Blessings,
Ralph & Basye Shuey |

another reason to be in the Smokies | #51 | ||

Was in the shop yesterday, with a Chattanooga FM station on the radio. Heard that the Cherokee Reservation is having their trout festival May 16-18. What got
my attention was prizes for catching tagged fish - $500 each, but I don't recall how many tagged fish. There will be one with a tag worth $100,000 !
Some of you really lucky guys might want to slip over the ridge and give it a try.

This may spoil the surprise of it all, but . . . is any one bringing any of Jim Beasley's rods, particularly his Perfectionist clone? I'm bringing a
Chris Carlin FET Special (8' 4/5wt 3 piece) which he modified to have a slightly slower butt.

Food Sources | #53 | ||
|
Mark;
Cheap breakfast/lunch/etc at the Deli portion of the new market just down the rod from you. Head back towards Maryville and you'll see Little River Outfitters and just past them is the new "town center" with a wonderful market with all kinds of goodies. In the same shopping center is a coffee shop etc. Good food across the street at the Carriage Inn restaurant by Tally Ho. Check with folks at LRO re. food as the restaurants go up and down in town. CAUTION Beer for sale at the market. Hard liquor and wine available in Maryville. So be prepared!!!! Ralph |

Ralph,
Sorry, but I'm going to have to bail on the trip to Townsend. I took the youngest step daughter to Dry Run creek last week and was a little over confident in the new steel knee. Took a fall and did a mild dislocation on the new steel joint. Stretched and pulled a LOT of muscles and the inside of my thigh is jet black from about 4 inches above my knee to my crotch! I'm a little sore, to say the least. No LIKELY permanent damage (according to my orthopedic surgeon), but I can't touch my thigh with a powder puff right now, so an 8 hour drive is out of the question. However, I am working, so rod production continues... including the work on your new rod. Hate to NOT come to this. I was really looking forward to seeing you again and meeting some of the board members. Well, there's always the Colorodo Rodmakers Reunion, assuming I don't fall off of the chair at the workbench between now and then!

Ouch!!! I feel your pain brother... No fun whatsoever!!!!
A quick update for all on my situation. We unexpectedly brought Basye home tonight!! The doctor was afraid she was becoming "institutionalized" and discharged her to force her out of that situation. We do have the first of the de-tox problems under control and we will wean her off the other as we go. Everyone was amazed that she pulled through the whole thing and that her colon finally started back up. Unfortunately, they had sedated her to the point that we have the de-tox problem. I'm due to take her back to the doc in 2 weeks, and then if all is well I have to live up to a promise to take her to the beach. She pulled through in part because of a promise to take her to the beach where she could lay on the sand and let the warm salt water wash all the "crud" off of her. That will be during the gathering, and I'm sorry guys... but she's been my "main squeeze" for 20 years and I'm not going to back out on her now... especially after she has pulled off a survival like this. The next few days are going to be an adventure here... but I've got lots of support from friends I didn't even know. We'll pull this off!!! Thanks All, Ralph

Ralph,
Good news! After what you folks have been through you definitely deserve a "day at the beach"! Maybe a week would be better. You have to follow up on the beach promise or you'll never hear the end of it - from her or from ME! Have fun, wear sunblock and soak it all in. Best, Michael |
