My new Spitfired LHW Hardy Perfect What do you guys think? |
Lead | ||
|
Just arrived today and I am very pleased with the reel. About 6 months ago I also posted pictures of a St. George Jr. that I also own that is bright. I would
like peoples comments on this reel also. I am curious what your thoughts are on the age of the reel. Do you think it came from the factory this way or was it
shined up after the fact. Was there a special edition of the perfect that came bright like this? and in LHW? Any comments would be appreciated also related
to what you believe the current value would be of this reel. Feel free to PM me if you don't want to post.
Thanks, Seabass

I can't say when it came from the factory, or how it came, but I can say that you have a very pretty set o reels there. My keyboard is about to short out
from the drool on it, especially since I'm also a southpaw

Seabass, I'm not expert but here's my 20c... To me it looks either 'original', old Hardy Perfect Spitfire or then its standard Hardy Perfect that has paint removed and then polished. There are two things which tell me that it is not the later Spitfire (Hardy Perfect Special Spitfire Limited Edition reels) which was targeted to Japanese markets. One is that I've been told that those were RHW only and another is engravings on the reel handle side. Your reel has different ones than those for Japanese markets. -Jukka |

Both reels are fake. The reel one the photo is a Hardy Perfect Special Spitfire Limited Edition for the Japanese markets. They made some of them in LHW. On
the St. George Jr Replica they changed the line guard to a agate on. Bothe reels has the paint removed and then polished.

You don't mean fake, you mean altered. The two reels are genuine Hardys that have been refinished.

Didn't the seller of the reel on eBay indicate the finish was removed and the reel polished with a clear finish applied?

castafly wrote: The seller did indicate that the finish was removed but this was done prior to his purchase of the reel. I purchased the reel thinking exactly what he had
disclosed. Upon my inspection of the reel however, I have a difficult time thinking that a reel can be stripped of the finish with all the bearings, agate and
such assembled without causing some damage or leaving some of the finish somewhere on the reel. The seller did mention that there was a clear finish applied
by him after he received it. But in our email exchange he mentioned that the guy he bought if from told him that the finish removal was done in England and
that there is only one way to remove the lead finish from an assembled reel. So, I guess my questions are really more as follow:

My book say the winding plate places this Perfect to 1946-66 and reintro from 1978 to 95(?) (second edition of Fishing Tackle-A Collectors Guide by Graham
Turner). I have not heard of the leaded finish being used in the 1946-66 period or after, right after WWII lead was probably hard to come by. The enameled
finish or paint finish was probably started then ( spitfire wid-drum's were produced in this period by JS I read) and this finish may be removed quite
easily with appropriate stripper, I will leave this part to the experts. If I were a LHW fisherman, like Seabass14, I would be thrilled to have a true
unaltered LHW. You can enjoy the drag of the Perfect in the, much sought after, LHW.
The fact that true LHW are very pricey, such as yours makes them valuable to every other lefty.

I think your Perfect reel is a beautifully refinished 1950's enamelled model as it has the same markings on the winding plate as my own LHW 50's
vintage; If you are wondering how refinishing can look so well done, the second pic is a refinished Special Perfect:
edit: Seabass, one other thing you should look at is the retaining screw on the spool - if it is the original, it should have an arrow on it denoting the direction of thread for spool removal - if you look at mine, you can just about make out the arrow on the screw:

Spey -
There actually was a short run of Perfect reels a few years back (I've seen 3 or 4 examples sell) that were also made for the Japanese market and had a finish with the entire reel "in the white" vs just the winding plate. Seabass's reel is not one of those (they had curved logos), but just thought it was worth noting that there are reissue all bright perfects that exist that came that way from Hardy's. I think Seabass's Perfect is a finely refinshed 1950s era reel that anyone shoudl be happy to own (that is anyone that winds with their wrong hand) Regarding the St George, I am no Hardy expert, but when that reel first came up I corresponded with a gentleman in teh UK who I do consider an expert on Hardy reels and was informed that this reel was "likely" from an order of bright reissue St George's being made for the Japanese market where the deal was not completed / fell through, and the reels were not intended to be sold. That said, I am of the opinion that Seabass's St George left the Hardy factory the way it looks in the above photos, but that it was not intended to leave the factory at all, and that Seabass and anyone esle lucky enough to buy one of these down the road has some cheeky fellow to thank mark B

This question is best addressed to Floodtide - he will answer all your queries about these reels. As usual he's never around
when you need him, does anyone know where he is these days? Nice reels by the way but somehow I don't think Floodtide would necessarily agree with all the
opinions expressed so far.
