Payne, Kusse & Bradford Banty | #962
|
When I originally saw this rod listed on the board I had absolutely no interest. I thought it was an Original 4'-4" Payne Banty and I had felt the
action of these models at several shows, actions that were non existent . I found out from an early buyer that this rod was built by Kusse from Payne parts and
had been recently restored by John Bradford and most importantly to me, at 5'-2" possessed a flexible action. I bought the rod and couldn't be
happier, sweet little rod with a nice flexible action for a 4 wt. line.

Marty,
Are you sure that grip isn't too small for those fists of fury of yours? I've seen more cork in wine bottles.

2 New! My first ordered rods from a modern maker. Mike Brooks has made me a 7'6" 2/2 Payne 100 with simple dark wraps and blackened hardware as well
as a 7' 2/2 Leonard Catskill Fairy 2 wgt with bronze snakes, bright hardware and olive wraps. Plus he put full intermediates on the sweet little thing!
I'm leaving for Pennsylvania in an hour to put both through their paces on classic waters. Plan to take photos of them in their natural habitat and post
'em here upon my return in 10 days.
Thanks, again, Mike!! Ken A Curmudgeon is just an Old Fart with outlet malfunction. You'd be grumpy, too. |

Today I received my new 7625 from John. This is my second Pickard rod, the first being a Pickard 8026 Guide. John's rods are flawless... I could not be
more pleased with the workmanship!

Norling 8' 5 weight, Carp on a fly | #968
|
Susan's 8' 5 weight from Dave Norling was delivered to her on the banks of a western Wisconsin spring creek by none other than Mr. Norling himself. The
first picture shows Mr. Norling with a nice carp caught by Susan while nymphing. Even Jimmy Houston wouldn't kiss that fish!! The other two show Susan
fighting and landing her first fish with the new rod.

Yesterday, while picking up my drift boat in Idaho Falls I met a guy who advertised it on Craig's list and consumated the purchase of this excellent+
Winston 8' 2/1 4wt. 3 5/8 oz. built by Merrick&Howells . It has sweet medium fast action and shows little use. A faster action than the norm Winston
medium action of that era. I might test a 3DT to see if it works.

Bill Taylor Rod | #971 | ||
|
Recently picked up this rod from Bill Taylor. The rod and case are among the most unique that I have. The rod is an 8' 3 wt hollowbuilt with light olive
wraps and red and black tipping. Along with Bill I christened it on the Breeches. I'm still having fun determining what line I like best with it.

Great rods, guys. Here's my latest; I found it over the weekend at an antiques store in upstate New York. It's a 7-foot 2/2 Abbey & Imrie made
by Heddon, probably in the early 1930s. Michael Sinclair's "Heddon" says many of these were relabeled as A & I rods after the #21 and #31
Featherlites were discontinued in 1933. This is the two-tip version, corresponding to the #31. It has the more unusual black winding check. Like all 21s and
31s, it lacks the swelled butt normally seen on Heddons, since the Featherlites were made from blanks meant to be the mid and tip sections of three-piece rods.
The serial number, inked above the winding check, is 3037. The winding check and butt cap appear to be Bakelite. The butt ferrule needs to be rewrapped and the
varnish overhauled but it is otherwise intact and feels like a great 3-weight.

Here's a rare excellent FE Thomas Browntone 7'6" 2/2 4wt. 3 1/2oz. w/orig tube, bag, tag and swelled butt which I received yesterday. It's
rare since you see lots of FET 3/2 configurations rods but rarely do you see a 2/2. IMHO the 2/2's in smaller lengths 8' and under are FET's finest
casting rods. Casted it last night with a Syllk WF4 and what a delight to flick it 60'+. It has both power and finesse. Like my 8' 2/2 5wt. Browntone
which I no longer own it has almost the same action fast side of medium-fast to almost fast. Compared to some 3/2's which I've owned they had medium
action while the 2/2's have a faster dry fly action. I plan to fish it when seattlesetters and I get together next week for a outing possibly on the
Firehole River.

Once that is cleaned up I should be a blast on the water. Dennis, you just keep finding great rods, and a 2/2 how sweet. |
