SB 359 info needed |

I have a South Bend 359-8 1/2 that I am refinishing. Can someone out there that has one of these do me a favor? Am looking for the original guide spacing and
guide sizes, as well as the size of the agatine stripper. I have a spare agatine stripper, but it looks small and was wondering how big the originals were.
Thanks.

I've got that model at the shop - it came to me stripped, but I am pretty sure there are still ghosting marks which would indicate guide spacing. The
original guides were kept, in a plastic bag.. if I can find it, should be able to tell you sizes. I can tell you for sure that this rod had a steel (Mildrum
or Perfection?) stripper, and it was small, equivalent of a Snake agate stripper 8mm, or at most 9mm. (I know that 359s from other eras came with agatines...)
I'll see tomorrow if I can find everything, and will post then. By the way, if you're not too much into exact preservation, my view is that that rod works much nicer with a couple more guides and closer guide spacing. Pretty darned use-able rods, especially for the money. More to follow... Lee |

Flamjamming, you will be appalled at this guide spacing, but I do fear it is original. The rod has comficient grip, ventilated grip, aluminum downlocking
reelseat. Varnish and threads look original, no ghosting in other spots. If it's not original, it must have been a very early re-do.
0 tiptop 7 17-1/4 27-3/4 36-1/4 46-1/8 58-3/4 70 stripper Can't find the little bag of guides, so I can't help with sizes. If you intend to use the rod for fishing and don't worry about originality, I would recommend something more like this, 10 guides plus stripper: 0 4-1/8 8-7/8 14-5/16 20-5/16 26-15/16 34-1/4 42-1/8 50-5/8 59-3/4 69-1/2 80 stripper All the best, Lee |

Lee - Thanks for the input. I have a couple of Heddon rods that are the same way, short on guides, but still don't cast too bad. Guess that's what you got when you bought a bamboo rod for $10. I will try some more guides. Any suggestions on guide sizes for your suggested spacing chart? |

It's all subjective, but I like to re-install guides that are somewhere between small originals and the oversized guides some put on, believing that it
helps shooting (probably does but...)
Anyway, maybe 2/0, 2/0, 1/0, 1/0, 1/0, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, stripper or if you like a little bigger 2/0, 1/0, 1/0, 1/0, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, stripper All the best, Lee |

I believe the 359 came in "E or HEH" or "D or HDH" configuration, maybe even "C". If it is the "E" weight you might use
Lee's first recommendation...with the "D" weight you might consider his second selection which I believe is closer to the original as to guide
size.
Best wishes, Chuck |

Hmmm... The only info left on the rod is the writing 359-8 1/2. How would I tell if the rod was a C, D, or E? Tip diameter? What would the diameters be for
these various line weights?

If I remember rightly, D is 6wt, E is 5wt.
So you could tape some guides on the rod and cast it to see which line works best. If it likes a 5, put on the smaller set; if it prefers a 6, use the larger set. If you don't want to bother, most of them that I've seen were 6wts, so you could just go with the bigger guides. Truth is, it won't really matter much either way, so you could easily just pick a set and put them on.and go fishin'. BTW, if you really only paid $10, that was a good deal! Lee |

Oh, no I meant that they paid $10 for these rods when they were new. That probably is stretching it but they probably didn't go for much more than that back in the day. Thanks for all the help fellas. |

The 1951 SB catalog has the 8.5' 359 listed as E or HDH. I think the earlier ones had a butt/mid ferrule size 1/16" less than the later.
