If the weather forecast holds true we'll have at least a week of good weather. Today was a nice day in the low 60's. We need a slow runnoff considering
all the snow but everything should settle down by mid-July. The upper Madison with the recent cool weather cleared but it's still running high but fishing
good along edges with rubberlegs dropped off a dry salmon fly pattern. Henry's Lake has been fishing outstanding. Salmonflies should start in the
"Box" of the Henry's Fork any day with the good weather.
I may hit Firehole tomorrow. Dennis

In 1997 we had our last high water year. It was a 500 year flood - Missouri flowing at 51,000 CFS - Gallatin 17,000, Madison 17,000, Jefferson 17000 CFS.
This is a much smaller event and we should see fishing improve near the 4th of July. It has been cold ( snow last Tuesday) and rainy for the last three weeks.
There is still plenty of snow in the mountains. It looks like the Beaverhead is flowing at a good summer rate. The Ruby above and below the dam are high but
fishable. You may have to pick your spots. Those of you late in July will have some water to fish as there is still plenty of snow in the mountains.
70's for highs and 40 for lows will make the runn off slow and this is what we need to have the summer fishing hold up. I probably will not string a rod
until after the fourth. Madison is still running about 7,000 cfs and looks like milky coffee - gallatin and jefferson are the same.
Best wishes and good fishing from Montana Gregg |

I just got back from fishing the Firehole on Thursday the 12th and had some excellent dry fly fishing for rainbows with a 3 hr hatch of PMD's size 14. It
lasted from 1pm-4pm. The fish were also hitting wet flies on the swing before the hatch. Weather in the YNP was very cold the night before with temps into the
high 20's and during the day temps into the high 30's light snow on and off. I drove in from Dillon with my friend Bill and stopped in to say
"Hello to the Boy's" in Twin Bridges, but no one was there at 7:30 am with snow coming down.
PMD 3 hr hatch 1pm-4pm June 12th Firehole
Phillipson rod with Bill Ballan reel size 14 PMD dun pattern View from the Madison River $3.00 bridge, water running high with no sign of Stones, rubber leg patterns working in the pocket water near the banks, too high to wade for most.
The best fishing of the trip was Mon and Tues 9, 10th with moderate flows around 4,000 cfs on the Big Hole. Flows were high two weeks ago pushing over 9,000 cfs and close too 10,000. We drifted two days and picked up some nice browns 14-18 inches on big rubber leg patterns with the hot fly a size 10 or 12 red San Juan worn below.
Fished the Beaverhead with Montana's own Chuck Robbins with good success once again on San Juan worms and PT's. The water was running mostly clear with weather cool and some rain with periods of snow and hail.

I'm not complaining about the current conditions. High water, lots of run-off, snow in June - we've needed just this kinda stuff for a long, long,
time. With the amount of water pushing out of Holter Dam over the past few weeks, the Missouri is getting a good cleaning from the bottom up! Not only that -
Great Falls finally got her falls back.

I just got back from a week on the Missouri. It was high, but we did very well nymphing in 15-20 feet of water. I had never nymphed so deep, so it was a
learning experience for sure. We also did alot of float tubing in the resevoir, and did well there as well. While we were there, they dropped the water level
a few feet, and the river started fishing even better, and more "normal". The hatches were staring as well, but with everything around Missoula
blown out, the fisherman were coming as well. I did here that a few days after I left, there was some seriously good hatches coming off some of the Missoula
rivers. I got back 5 days ago, so I am sure things are back in full swing. The flows on the MO were 15,000 cfs when we were there, before they started
dropping.

Checked on the Upper Madison today and it's still running off-color and bank to bank 2900 CFS normal 1200. Saw lots of guides having their clients fishing
the edges throwing rubberlegs with decent success. Still a fair amount snow to come off above 8000'. Cabin & Beaver Creeks are running gray which means
Quake if off-color and the only clear water is below Hebgen Dam for 1/4 mile. I don't believe the Madison or Gallatin will be good dry fly fishing for at
least two more weeks possibly longer. I've seen no reports of a salmonflies above Ennis in a normal year they would be between Varney and McAtee. Park
waters are starting to come down and the Firehole is fishing great on cloudy days.
