Another Dingley question |
Lead | ||
|
I bought a wire cage, strap over tension regulator Dingley reel this week with a bone handle and brass line guard. It is a beautiful 3 1/4" reel stamped
Westley Richards however,it has a plated, brass foot. I am now thinking that the foot is a replacement and am considering returning it. Did these circa
1930-40's Dingleys ever have anything other than a brass foot? The screws don't look correct and the underside of the foot pillars look like they have
been messed with. I hate to return it 'cause it is a really cool reel but if the foot is a replacement I will. I hope Richard and you other Dingley guys
will respond with your opinions. Thanks, Gary.

Gary, pictures would really help a lot. If you have trouble posting them, send me a pm and I'll give you my email address and post them for you.

Tom,
Gary posted some Dingley photos last evening as a test under "Techical Support." I am guessing, a pure guess, that those are the reel although they may not help. Charlie |

Got em, Charlie. Thanks.
Gary, I cant tell from the pics whether or not its a replacement. I will say that Ive got several D's which have the same reel foot attachment configuration ( the 2 post rather than one thick post) and I dont think mine are replacements. Bow River and Bulldog need to weigh in here, but it may require some more pics. Sorry, I couldnt be more help. |

no offense, photos are not sharp, but I suspect it is an original brass foot that somebody decided to nickel plate. Maybe they had electroless nickel around
and decided to play with it.
I have seen Dingley reels with nickel-silver feet, but these usually look like yellow metal (which they are), but it may be possible to polish one to bright. obviously not the same-shaped foot, but this is a nickel-silver Dingley foot.

And I too have a couple two-post feet on Dingleys, including the Struan reel--a Dingley copyrighted version. Sharper photos would sure help!

Charlie and Tom, you are correct. The pics under the Tech Support are of the reel. Hopefully, here are some that are crisper.
I have a new camera and am still struggling with it but progress is being made. Thanks, Gary. |

any dingley that i have had all had brass feet , the newer ones from when the son had the shop the brass was not as nice i think
on my reels some were the dark blue but thats just tarnish from all the years gone by , i can't find your reel picture to see what it looks like , but if it's like daryl reels feet then thats what most of mine are , very easy to clean up to look like a new foot , gary send me a picture to my home email address dutchflythebow@yahoo.ca ,, hold onto the reel yet as i'm sure it can be cleaned to the orignal brass

Here's a Dingley "Struan" with the same "silver" foot. I own several of these with these non-brass feet.

Richard, here are a couple more of the same reel... the apparent "wear" on the backside is far worse in the photo than in reality. Foot is 2
5/8" in length & the reel a 3 1/4-incher.
