1 weight? 2 weight? Wasting my time? |

I am a novice bamboo rod "finisher". I've made two that I love, and am interested in making a third. I'd like to go light and short, but most
everywhere I look stops at 3 weight on the low end. Is there anyone that makes a blank suitable for a 2 or 1 weight line? Is there some reason I'm missing
why this is a stupid idea? Should I just finish a glass or graphite rod in that size?

Not a stupid idea at all. I have a nice little one wt. qaud that I have used twice. It is actually a real pleasure on small streams with smaller sized fish,
where sometimes even using three weights are like catching a bluegill on Musky tackle.

Leonard Fairy Catskill. This is a 7' 2 pc true two weight. Th taper is widely available. Make sure you do the tips as spec'd. They are very thin and
quite a challenge, but a lot of fun. The rod is surprisingly crisp and you will have no trouble casting 40 feet of line with it, but it excells for close in
fishing.

Hi Mike:
I don't think the original poster is a rod maker. He is looking for a blank. Perhaps you should make one for him. But I am interested in the taper you mentioned and it probably will be one of my next three regular winter rods. So I wanted to ask you the question: Is that taper for step down ferrules (see the drop at 42")? I took it from RodDNA where a #13 ferrule is specified. Surely that's a typo. Would appreciate your thoughts.

I have this specific rod built by Mike and it is an excellent taper IMHO!

I second diamante's opinion re. Mike's 2wgt. Catskill Fairy and also recommend that Neil get in touch with Mike re. buying a blank. Ken

Add me to the list of people who have a Mike Brooks Leonard Fairy Catskill ~~ 7' 2/2 2wt. I haven't had a chance to fish it yet ~~ but I have lawn
cast it out by the pool and I really like it. Maybe I can get out tomorrow ~~ my fireworks display will be a wild rainbow trout. I can only hope...

If you look at the 'Forum Announcements' section of the board, there is a reference to a Gary Lacey 1-weight based on an F.E. Thomas taper. I don't
know whether there are blanks available, but at least the taper exists.

Gary Lacey will make you a one weight rod. He made one for me approximately two years ago (7ft 3/2) that is very nice. Ron Kusse's 1wt rod is based on the
Leonard Baby Catskill (6ft 2/2).
