A bug question for you Wisc. fly fishers |

I fished the Rush River this morning. Caddis and bwos were hatching, and a #18 Adams was doing quite nicely. Then came a blanket hatch of tiny black mayflies,
about size #22. When the trout got onto them--and they were feeding heavily--I couldn't match it. Tried a #22 parachute adams, without result. This mayfly
is black, with black wings. I've heard about this hatch from a friend of mine, who calls them "Darth Vaders." Anybody familiar with this mayfly?

Billy,
Yep..you found 'em. They also stifled me on Tuesday breaking in that new model 50 of mine! I'm familiar enough to know you need to tie some duns... in other words..#20 black BWO's, obviously. They're Seratella Deficiens (ugh!!) ... "Iron Blue Dun". Comes late May to early June. Just remember Sulpher time! I have a note alongside this note that says "...changes in weather." That tells me something like this triggers these boys. It's a fairly simple hatch to make work, when you ... have the flies. I've made Trico's work in a pinch although I got buggered up because it's early for Trikes just yet! Try this URL from the Wis BB.... http://www.wisflyfishing.com/iwp_home.html Hope it still works. Jeremy. |

Thanks, Jeremy. It was quite a massive hatch. Sorry to hear about your elbow. Bill

Found it on this site: http://www.troutnut.com/specimen/594. I guess they call it a "dark blue quill."

Oh, so it's not just for autographs! Actually that's a pretty good idea! Thanks for passing it along to us that are not so initiated. Tim

A simple fly tied with a black dubbed body, dark-dun hackle with the same dark dun hackle tail in the right size has always worked fine. That fly comes every
year starting as early as memorial day and lasting into mid-june. Seems to prefer cloudy conditions. Next time you catch one take a close look at the legs.
