This rod, the "highest" grade of the the Zephyr Brand Extra Light Series according to Sinclair's book arrived yesterday, and I was looking for
some input for anyone who might have a similar model. Also according to Sinclair, at the time this rod sold in the 1940's, it was priced at $8.00 and a
Rapidan was selling for $8.50, so this was in all likelyhood a middle of the pack rod for Montague quality-wise in the total fly rod lineup. Given the really
slow action (think Midge and then think maybe half again slower!) and the relative "grade" compared to the other Zephyrs, I am really surprised at
the guide spacing on this rod. The butt section has just the agate stripper, the mid has only 2 snakes, and the tips have 2 snakes then agate tiptops. I would
think a soft rod like this would need like at least 9 guides properly distributed though its 8.5 foot length. Does anyone else have a Zephyr, and how many
guides are on your rod? Spacing? Here's a couple of pics of the Little Smokey, I may restore this rod, or part with it if someone's really interested,
Todd
