One and only Orvis bamboo rod - which one? |
Lead | ||
|
I would like to have just one Orvis bamboo fly rod, preferably a Battenkill or Madison, to add to my small collection of early Orvis graphite rods such as the
Far and Fine, Limestone Special, Powerhouse etc. It would be that one rod that I just couldn't afford when I started out with these graphite rods around
1978 or so when the bamboo rods in the Orvis catalogue were really in another price league. Which rods are desirable and should I choose? It would be a
collectors rod that would be fished a few times each year; preferably a 5 or 6 weight. I know this is all a bit strange, but it is about the old man buying the
Dinky Supertoy he just could not have when he was a kid.

If I could have one Orvis it would be a Limestone Special - 8'6" 4 1/2 oz 6 wt. It is the finest taper Orvis ever built in my opinion , but I fish
big rivers in the West. My second choice would be an 8' 4 oz slow action battenkil....Mine was hand selected by Perk Perkins when the peroson who bought
it had an issue.

Well I've only fished a few of them so I'm no expert, but you can't go wrong with the 7 1/2' 3 7/8 oz Battenkill. I wouldn't necessarily
call it a collector's rod. It was meant to be fished.

For general purpose fishing, any of the following: 8ft 4.125 oz 2pc; 8ft 3 pc; or 7.5 3.875oz 2 pc. But if you want a fine small stream rod, I'd go for
the 6.5 ft 2pc 4wt Battenkill. After owning most of the Orvis models, the 6.5 is the one I kept.

I have 10 Orvis bamboo rods in my collection. They range from 6'6" to 8'6" and I truly like them all.
But my absolute favorite is a 7'6" 3 1/4 oz. Superfine for a 5 wt. Simply put, it's just a superlative rod for stream fishing for trout. It does everything I ask it to do, and does it well. Regards, Flyman

Our own Ted Golden is selling a memorable and collectors grade rod at the moment. It might be worth your consideration. . http://clarksclassicflyrodforum.yuku.com/topic/11706

I own 4 Orvis cane rods and love each and every one of them. And I am unable to pick just one as there are two that I could not live without: my 7.5 foot 3
7/8 oz Battenkill and my 6.5 foot Flea. These two rods cover most of my southern appalachian trout fishing environs very well.

As always seems to be the case, I agree with Drew- the 7/4 is a terrific taper. |

All though the thought of having only one Orvis Rod is a little scary if I had to chose it would be the 7.5' 3& 1/4 oz 5 wt.Superfine . To me it's
the perfect rod for the small to medium streams I fish in Pa.and NJ. Classic good looks and fine action. A close runner up would be the 7/4 but it is just not
quite as versitile.

Thanks to all for your input; the tedgolden rod that's for sale is pretty scary though: I wouldn't dare remove it from its coffin, let alone actually
fish it.........

I've always liked the "Midge" and am hoping to find a "Midge/Nymph" in good shape for a decent price.
The Superfine is a wonderful rod too. Hard to choose.
Fishing with bait is like swearing in church.

Picked up a 7'6" 2/2 4 1/8oz. Bakelite(pre-Battenkill) #5894 HDH 13 ferrule without a doubt the finest 5 wt. ever produced by Orvis IMHO. It has a
almost fast action unlike at the other end of the spectrum the Orvis Midge which you can watch grass grow while it loads.

The old 8ft 41/8 oz was the rodof choice for Orvis when they used bamboo rods at their casting school. Still is a fine casting, all around rod for most uses.

I have fished a lot of different Orvis tapers. I really like the 7'6" Orvis Deluxe. Casts like a dream and its a great length.

Its for the later in the game Far & Fine 7 1/2' 5wt 2/2. Casts like many of the other "developed" tapers that everyone asks for from the
good ole makers. When was the last time someone asked to have any of the "other" Orvis tapers duplicated by a modern maker. This one looks more
like it came from Dickerson or Payne.

WatercolorMan,
I once owned a 7'6" 4oz too and it was marvelous but the 4 1/8oz is just a smidge faster. Dennis
