Anyone know of some plans or a description of how to make a dial indicator base? I have an indicator I inherited from my grandfather (a machinest) and want to
make a base to assist me in making my planing forms...
Thanks!
Thanks!

Run a search on ebay for dial indicators... they should have some bases for sale too.
Thinking about it further... depending on which indicator you have, you could maybe drill a hole in some steel, or brass, or hardwood, and mount the indicator in the hole. Hole could be a little undersized, or you could make it oversized and cut a slot and drill another hole that would pass thru the slot, so that you could slip the indicator into the hole and use a nut and bolt to close the slot and grab the indicator. You don't need much travel, you just need to zero out the dial with the point on the form. Hopefully there are some ideas for ya up there??????? Have fun,,,,,,,,,

Todd's Power Fibers CDs have a great article and step by step instructions by Tony Spezio. I'm not sure which issue, but I recommend anyone buy them
all past, present, and future.
No financial interest. |

How I made mine | #3 | ||
|
Hi,
I simply bought a short length of round bronze bar, ca. 42mm x 60mm. Flattened one end with wet/dry sandpaper on a plate of glass. Measured the indicator's stem, and used an accordingly sized drillbit to make the hole with my drillpress. I then drilled another hole in the base's side, and tapped threads for a bolt to secure the stem. I don't think it even took me an hour-and it works. My old base was made of MDF and plexiglass, it worked too... Idar

The Power Fibers' issue 27 has the article that 1sweetcane mentioned. It provides a thorough explanation of the steps involved along with pictures.

I used a piecs of steel that I trued with a file. I then drilled a hole all the way through big enough to let the indicator arm travel. I then driled a
pocket deep enough to hold the indicator.
