Welcome to the Forum. If I lost a PHY rod I know I'd still be thinking about it 30 years later. I do not have that rod listed on the PHY Rod Database (see
link below if you haven't been there yet). Give me as much information as you can remember (model, length, whether one or both tips were with it when lost)
and I'll add it to the database. There are a few PHY rods somewhere out there that are known to have been lost on fishing trips, most notably the first
"Bobby Doerr" rod that was made for Doerr himself.
Quashnet's Paul H. Young Rod Database has photos and descriptions of over
320 PHY Co. rods, plus catalogs, accessories, etc. Thank you to all
who continue to send me PHY rod photos and info.

That's strange... about 10 or 15 years ago, I had a rod come through the shop, a PHY Parabolic 15, that was made for a "Georgia Barnes" in 1949. It had a bit smaller handle on it than any other 15 I had seen. I sold that rod to a broker for the customer that owned it. The rod did say where "Georgia Barnes" was from, but I just can't remember. Been a long time. I was just curious if there might be a connection between Georgia Barnes and H.Y. Barnes? |

The 7'6" rod with 12/64 ferrule and 3/64 tiptop would have been a very lightweight rod intended for tiny flies, and at least to a certain extent a
custom order, so probably was Deluxe grade (assembled to order). The lightest cataloged 7'6" PHY blank in the late 1940's - 1950 that I have found
has a 4/64 tiptop. The late 1940's-early 1950's was a time period when I believe that Paul H. Young was at the height of his creativity and trying all
sorts of new ideas.
The 8'0" rod, 3-3/4 oz. finished weight, with 14/64 ferrule and 4-1/2/64 tiptop is a model found in the 1950 PHY catalog. It was rated for an HDH line. Given the personalization of owner name, city, and date, it is probably a Deluxe too, though it might be a Special or even an Ace. If I understand what you've said correctly, the listings of these rods in the database should be as written below. Let me know if there should be any changes. Thank you for contributing this information toward the ongoing effort to understand Paul Young's work. It may be a long shot, but perhaps the listing may someday bring news of your mother's lost fly rod. PHY 7'6" rod built for Mrs. H.Y. Barnes circa 1950, 7'6", 2/2, 12/64 ferrule, 3/64 tiptop, unusually light tiptop not cataloged in that time period, only one tip known for this rod, assembled rod with other tip was lost near the Brueal River, Minnesota in the late 1970's. Reported by macbarn of the Classic Fly Rod Forum (his mother's rod). PHY 8'0" rod built with three tips for H.Y. Barnes of Toledo, Ohio in 1950, 8'0", 2/3, rod is marked H.Y. Barnes, Toledo, Mar 29 50 8' 3-3/4 oz 14/64 fer 4 1/2/64 tip top Paul H Young Detroit Maker. Reported by macbarn of the Classic Fly Rod Forum (his father's rod). - edited following M.B.'s comment below.

This is a little bit of a shot in the dark.
There was a PHY rod sold on e-bay 2 years? or so ago. The name on the rod was Barnes? but the description had it as something else, Barness or something similiar. Peter |
