creaky; Jeff is cranking out Volume II and hopes to have it "hot off the presses" later this year. From what he has told me it is going to take off
right where Volume 1 finished and march on through towards the here and now. I'm looking forward to it, also.
Ken A Curmudgeon is just an Old Fart with outlet malfunction. You'd be grumpy, too. |

Joe Beelhart is currently working on a book on Gary Howells - so far about 250 pages written - interviews scheduled with Glenn Brackett,m Tom Morgan,
relatives, and friends. Over 1000 photos to chose from and all of the records including checks and tax returns to fill in the blanks. Should be a great
tribute to a wonderful rod builder. All of Gary's correspondence since he kept duplicates not only lets you see his responses to inquiries but both sides
of the conversation. Should be an interesting work since there is more information than most books to date about a single rod buiolder - there should be some
appendixes to support all of the history of Gary Howells and his rods - Thanks to all of you who supplied Maniac with Howells information....

I don't know if anyone has ever mentioned "Rod Crafting" by Jeffrey Hatton - It is GREAT! It deserves mentioning! The book takes a look at the history of fly fishing rods from the early 1800s to the 1970s, with informative historical text and hundreds of full color photographs. Mr. Hatton had access to five private and extensive collections and covers the first three ages of rod-making: The Smith Age, up to 1870; the Expansion Era, 1870-1900; and the Classic Era, 1900-1970s. It is a Frank Amato Publication but it is probably one of their finest to date! I think this is a 'sleeper' and should really increase in value over the years such as; Howell, Keane, Kirkfield, Cattanach, etc., etc.! The illustrations of rods are nothing short of incredible! You will spend hours with this book. For all I know, Mr. Hattan is probably a member of the forum. AnglingBooks |

Yes, that was who my first question was about, anglingbooks, he is a member and has sold his Vol 1 to many forum members, who are waiting for Vol II! It's
a very nice book.

No problem AB - It is volume 1 that has folks so interested in what is coming next! Newer rods are a primary interest of mine, and I will be very interested
in what Jeff has put together this time.

Great to hear about the wonderful works in progress. A book about the history of Winston bamboo and the makers would be fantastic - is it possible that such
a book is in progress as well?

I heard Martin Keane is working on a new book. To me Classic Rods and Rodmakers is a classic.

Rod Crafting II Update
a month ago as I was just about done with final editing my computer had a severe cramp and it was caused by me loading my hard drive to within 2% of totally full. This caused me to have to rebuild the system and addin external hard drives to gain more capacity. this cost me at least 3 weeks of frustration. I am learning Vista now and have my xp and vista networked together to be able to continue to use my new publishing program "Quark" . Volume II will continue on as Ken mentioned and I am going to try to cover the makers of the dark age of bamboo (1970-1990) fairly well and it will have a strong emphasis on the modern makers of 1990 to the present. And the quality of the work submitted has been breath taking to say the least. AB I pm'd you. see your message box. ANd many thanks for the kind words about volume I and Vol II will be much cleaner and tighter as far as the technical aspects of the book go; I.E. editing and layout etc. I am pleased with what is coming out. humbly your gnome Jeff |
