reel seat pocket |

I don't think I am going to be able to remove the reel seat I messed up, but it has a pocket for the reel foot at the base that looks like it was soldered
on - can that be removed?

Sounds do-able, although I doubt the cap is "soldered", it's probably epoxy and heat should make it come off, boiling water or a heat gun (be
careful not to burn yourself, heat can be bery dangerous!!!). I read in the other thread the 5-min epoxy didn't give...that means you didn't give it
enough heat, you need to give it more. Be careful though you can ruing the wood with too much heat. Also, the cap may be pinned but I doubt is. At worst you
would have to replace the entire reel seat, that's not terribly expensive nor hard to do if you know what you're doing. If the info on this board
doesn't make sense get yourself a good rod repair or rod making book and you should be able to figure it out.
From reading this thread and the other one maybe you might be better off having somebody do the work for you? There are a couple guys on the board that do this kind of work for a reasonable price, and you don't have to worry about mistakes. Try googling Dennis Stone (goes by tapermaker on this board). He can probably fix it. Good luck, -John

Thanks, I might have to send it off. I wouldn't mind cutting it off and adding a new reel seat, though, I could do that if I could just rip the old one
off. Do you just use a Dremel to kind of chip the old one off? The aluminum sleeve is pretty thin, then there is a wooden piece kind of like a reel seat insert
underneath it.

If you try to chip it off you will most likely ruin it. The metal isn't that strong. Try heat. If you can't get it off, consider throwing it in the
trash. You could try a dremel tool but you're talking a lot of work with no guarantees you won't ruin it.

I guess I don't understand - I wouldn't mind ruining the present seat - I just want to get it off. Can I do that with a Dremel? Cut the aluminum sleeve
lengthwise with a disk, then cut the round insert below it the same way till I get back down to the blank?

If it's an all metal seat, the cap could be soldered on and have a pin trough it, Id' look for a pin and remove. Heat should loosen the metal as it
should be glued to a wood insert (it's this insert that can be chipped away or carefully cut away with a dreeml tool)

If I get the pin out, would I still run the risk of fire by heating up the joint between the pocket and the aluminum sleeve? The sleeve is epoxied to the wood
insert beneath, and this is what I can't remove, but I wouldn't mind cutting off the aluminum sleeve, then the wood insert, to get down to the bamboo
blank, then putting on an entire new reel seat. Can I use the Dremel to cut the aluminum away from the wood insert, as well as cutting the wood off? All I
really need to do is get the end pocket off, so I can remove the downlocking ring and turn it around, as I put it together with the bigger side of the ring
away from the reel foot. Can I just cut the pocket off and replace with a regular butt end from a slide band reel seat? Then I think the ring would fall off.

Chances are the bamboo does not go all the way through the reel seat.
Yes, if you have the patience to cut the aluminum off go for it. The wood insert will come off fairly easy in pieces. Pete
