Sam Olin rods |

I received an email last night from a descendent of Sam Olin. He mailed me the URL for a web site that he maintains about Sam - an unheralded California
rod-maker starting about 1890. He may or may not have copied Divine. If you are really into rod craftsmanship, unique mottling of cane, unique wraps, or 6
strip rod sections that have 6-8 full twists, check it out. On the Rod Construction page, be sure to click on all of those tiny thumbnail pix for the high
resolution version. I'll be curious to see what you think.

If I may, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the administration of Classic Fly Rod Forum and especially Tom Kerr for creating this thread. Although
I thoroughly enjoy stream fishing in the high sierras I have never been very good at fly fishing nor do I know much about it. I do however have the ability to
recognize fine craftsmanship and I am pleased to share these rods with the fine folks on this forum.
As I mention on my web site, I have three other rods that are not fly rods, however he used the same method of twist and finish. My question is, does anyone think it would be of value to post pictures on the web site as well? One thing is certain his passion was really for the fly rods, I doubt many of the salt water rods were built. Lastly I had a lengthy phone conversation with Jim Adams regarding Sam's rods. He has two one damaged that is for sale and one that is pristine and in his collection. He has actually fished with the one in his collection and was extremely pleased with how well it worked. I don't know if he participates on this forum but I am sure he can provide a more technical description of the rod and its properties. Thank you Dave |

Dave,
You certainly have my respect and congratulations for having created that website in recognition of your great-grandfather and the wonderful rods he crafted. Thank you, and thanks to Tom for pointing it out. Charlie |

The website is a labor of love devoted to a man who was obviously a master of his craft. Well done, Dave.
Olin's radical twist must have required spot-on accuracy and precision in its construction, otherwise your cast could wind up anywhere but where you aimed. The fact that he adopted it in order to improve his accuracy shows that he had that problem licked. The "faux snakewood" finish and wraps are marvelous, as is the neatly understated reelseat. Again, the signs of a master craftsman, defined as one who is willing to take infinite pains to create a thing of beauty and taste. Beautiful.
The more I think I know, the less I know I know.

Reading this thread by accident I remembered to have still some strange rods in my collection which I had not been able to identify.
After a short visit to Dave's website I went to my storage room to checked back. And indeed, I found one of Sam Olin's rod, it's a 9 feet fly rod in 3 pieces. I'm happy to have identified one more piece of interesting rod history. It's more than 20 years now that I got this rod from an old friend and I have no idea how it found his way to Europe and Switzerland. I will post some pictures of my rod to Dave, perhaps later on you will find them on his website. Best regards from Switzerland Philipp |

Phillip Thank you so much!! Every piece of information on Sam's rods confirms the family traditions passed down. My grandfather used to tell me that people came from far away to purchase one of Sam Olin's rods. Also I would love to add pictures of your Rod to Sam's web site. Perhaps you have some expertise in Flyrods and could post a critique of the rod in this forum? Please contact me at waterworld2@earthlink.net so we might exchange information. Dave |
