Hi Dennis:
I have a custom taper Carpenter, if this is what you're asking about. As far as I know, it wasn't developed with the intent of choosing a taper for a standard offering, but it is a one-off. It is a Browntone 8' 3/2 #5.

Uni,
I'm asking about a Carpenter that is marked prototype. Thanks for the response. Soda Butte is prime now that the water has come down. Dennis |

Well, I pulled the trigger on a rare unused Carpenter Browntone Prototype Parabolic 7'1" 2/2 4wt. built 1995 Serial #1 w/provenance from Walt.
I've been looking for one of Walt's rods for awhile and when this rare one came up I went for it.

Congratulations on acquiring your new Carpenter rod! I can't speak on the parabolic action but to me, there is nothing more stunning than his Browntone
finish. Best of luck!

A friend of mine has a Carpenter prototype. I think it is an 8 1/2 2/2 for a six weight. The tips have different actions and are so marked. The finish is
like his regular rods. I use to have a 7'9" Carpenter that was not marked. I bought it directly from Walt and said he wanted to build a parabolic
taper. It was very sweet casting and beautiful to look at! I did sell it because I needed to raise some cash and I wish I still had it.
Enjoy your new rod. Bill

Firehole, one you get your rod from Bob (I assume you purchased the rod that is his featured rod) let us all know what you think. I am not a great fan of
parabolics, but I do love Walt's rods and I bet that this will be a really cool rod to own. Would love to know what you think about its actions (the two
tips) and how much different the two tips are re casting/line weight/etc.... Ric

Yep, I picked it up from Bob and I really like parabolics. I will give it a test drive and give a report.

Dennis,
As I have mentioned prior to this, at one time I had a Carpenter prototype 71/2' four weight mahogany model with full intermediates. It was based on an early F E Thomas model and had a wet fly action. I believe he later built a special series based on this prototype but with more of a dry fly action. This particular rod was pictured in an outdoor magazine that featured Walt back in the 80's as one of America's premier artisans. I have since regretted selling it, however, the funds were used for a worthy purpose. Jim |

I received the Carpenter Parabolic red wrap " Browntone " 7'1" 2/2 4wt. #1 yesterday. It has two different tips one with 7 snake guides
on one tip and the other tip with 6. The butt has a stripper guide and two snakes. It does not have a swelled butt. It also came with a letter from Walt saying
it was a " One of a Kind " and the prototype for his Parabolic Series which he launched last year. I test casted it and it has a smooth on the fast
side medium action. Easily cast 60'+ of with flexing all the way down into the butt. It was sweet with Carpenter expected craftsmanship..

Dennis,
Do you wind RH? If so, did you always fish that way? I've thought about making the switch but thought it would be too difficult to get used to it. Bill - N2B |

Bill,
I've always been a RH winder. It makes it cheaper to buy those nice older little Hardy's like my most recent acquisition the one in the picture a 1922-23 2 7/8" Perfect w/grey agate. Dennis |

Dennis, this is wonderful rod. Congratulations! I always enjoy his craftmanship. I never realized that he has a new parabolic rod series. Bernhard

Thanks Dennis. Strange questions but I'm curious about "converting" to RHW just so I can have a wide selection of reels opened up to me... plus
RHW reels don't generally break the bank like LHW.

Today, I was fortunate to meet Per Brandin and numerous cane collectors/tournament casters at Nelson's Ishiyama's Henry's Fork Lodge. After coffee
we retired to Osborne Bridge to cast 25+ rods including 4 of Per's 8'3" 4wts. Per's hex 8'3 4wt. was awesome. Nelson also had a rod built
by a Japanese builder but I forget his name made from Japanese cane that was just a wonderful caster. Per casted my Carpenter 7'1" 4 wt. Parabolic and
said it was one of the finest parabolics he had ever casted. I also got rave reviews on my Sweetgrass Quad 7'9" 3/2 4/5wt. Nelson was great host and I
thank him for inviting me. It was just magical seeing all these great rods and watching these guys cast them. If they do it next year I hope to be there.
Dennis update: Nelson's Japanese rod was made by Yoshida.

His name is Yukihiro Yoshida and builds most rods out of Japanese bamboo called "Madake" It has a unique characters all it's own that must be
cast to be appreciated . Kagerow still offers one model made with "Madake" called the "Japan Model" which is just wonderful but still out
of the 9 models Kagerow builds 8 are still built with Tonkin cane. The Carpenter 7'1" 4 wt. Parabolic shouldn't be a surprise as it's most
likely the same Jim Payne taper unless Walt tweaked it? I wonder if anyone got a chance to cast any of the Reams 8'3" 4wt because it a real gem of a
rod!!
Sounds like everyone had a great time!
