Need photos of Kosmic & Payne rods for an article. |
Lead | ||
|
Gentlemen: As I have already posted, I am doing an article that will be published by the Anglers' Club of New York, and probably The American Museum of Fly
Fishing's journal. My intention for years has been to take the time (I am supposed to be working on Vol. II of my Grand Cascapedia book, but always get
bored with it - this being my eighth year on the project - this time of year) to document the men, and the extraordinary work of the Payne Rod. Co. I now have
something of about twenty pages that is grinding into shape, but I could use some help from any willing members of this wonderful board. I have the following
photo needs for the article. They can arrive to my email address, hoagy@hoagy.com in jpg. Kosmic- the ferrule, male and female, with the silk ferrule winding
also showing. One of the Kosmic celluloid reel seats, with the Kosmic name in full view if possible. And, a photo of the A. G. Spalding name on the nickle
silver hardware. Payne, Ed- I need a photo of his reel seat with the half-Wells cork hand grasp. Also, a photo of the Payne name stamped on the reel seat. A
photo of his "pot-belly" ferrule would also be helpful. And, if someone could send me photos of Jim Payne's Halstead hardware, down and
up-locking seats, as well as the sliding band seat, I could use that also. I do have two great early photos of Ed Payne, his house, his shop, and some
wonderful ones of Jim. But, if there is anyone out there who is willing to share an Ed Payne photo that I may not have, or one of Frank Oram (Jim Payne's
partner, starting in 1925), I would be thrilled. A Francis Philbrook photo, which I have yet to find, would send me directly over the moon. I know that many of
the guys on this board are more than willing to share information, ideas, as well as photos. If I do get much of what I need (for which I will give credit if I
know the senders name) I will post that, so that that members will know that I no longer need, say, Ed Payne photos. And, if anyone who is willing to help has
some of these photos and would rather send it on a disc by mail, we can do that also. And, if there is a recognized Kosmic or Payne "expert" I would
gladly send an advance copy of the article to them in hopes that they would take the time to correct any mistakes which might be lurking in the text. Many,
many thanks guys. It is all about the power of knowledge. I too love the sharing of it. H. Carmichael

Hi Hoagy...
See my article in Winter 2008 issue of the American Fly Fisher on Halstead. Figure 2 shows Halstead's influence on Payne up and downlocking reelseats. The early (Ed) Payne "pot belly" ferrule is seen in Figure 3 of that paper. The down-locking reelseat and nickle silver pot belly ferrules are on the 8 ft.rod formerly owned by Roy Steenrod . It is an early Jim Payne rod. I own this tackle and can provide photos of these if you think they'll help you. J |

Bluedun: I have read your very well written article, and am convinced that Halstead was an influence to many in the trade. An odd duck (I have had several
friends who knew him very well), but good with his hands. He was a good fit with Jim Payne as his ideas were simple, yet elegant. I now have enough photos of
Kosmic and Payne rods, thanks to many on this board. You have been wonderful. Might anyone here know anything about Wendel "Tom" Collins who took
over the Payne ownership from McVickar in 1948? I have the usual stuff, Keane, Schweibert, etc., but if anyone has insight into the man, even knowledge as to
what his business was, I would love to know. Lastly, I would love a "reader" or three. Guys who would like to see part 1 of this article (Ed Payne -
thru his death in 1914), with a critical eye to fact checking, offering suggestions as to what might be added, etc. My skin is thick. If you would like to read
the eight pages or so, please drop me a note at hoagy@hoagy.com. I will send it to you - in hopes that only three or four of you respond. Again, my thanks to
all of you who have been a help. I want to get the facts right, so those who are Payne and Kosmic experts, and want to take a thoughtful minute or two, drop me
a line. Regards. Hoagy

Hoagy,
I just had the chance to read this thread, as I have been away. You say you have enough Payne material, but I thought I would write this anyway. I have an early Payne that I thought you may be interested in. It is a very light 8' 3 pc. in the same vein as the Leonard Fairy Catskills and the Hawes Featherweights. At an even 3 oz. and 14 and 8 ferrules and .052 at the top, it is the smallest 8' Payne that I have encountered. The full metal sliding band reelseat is also a scaled down version, being 5/8 dia. and 3" in length with a tiny "E. F. Payne" cartouche stamped on the seat near the 4 3/4 in. grip. The sliding band is rolled and soldered, something else I have don't remember seeing on a Payne, and has dark red wraps, intermediates and signature wraps. I can certainly send a couple of pictures, or I could bring it to Lang's in the fall so you could inspect it first hand. Regards, Dana |

Dana: One never has enough information or photos. I would love to see several good photos of that rod, with an eye to publishing at least one. It does sound
unusual, and might well fit this article. You can send the photos to: hoagy@hoagy.com Many thanks. Hoagy

It has not been published yet. Due in a not-too-distant issue of American Fly Fisher magazine. There's a long waiting line for AFF ever since Art of Angling was discontinued. There aren't many alternatives to Art of Angling, at least not many with national scope. Jeff |
